How To Fix A Leaf Blower That Won’t Start

Do you have a big garden in your house? Then leaf blowers will already be playing an essential part in cleaning up the backyard.

While some prefer using rakes, this machine makes it easier to collect leaves. Now the leaf blower that I was using started malfunctioning, and I was confused about the cause of this problem.

That is when my husband stepped in and explained the different parts to me. He told me about how to understand if a part is not working, and his teachings have helped me a lot. Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and today I will share my knowledge on how to fix a leaf blower that won't start.

Dive in to know more!

How To Fix A Leaf Blower?

There could be multiple reasons behind the device not starting. I have listed them down in this section. Check all the parts one after the other to find out which one is causing an issue.

1. Spark Plug

A malfunctioning spark plug can be the reason behind your leaf blower not starting. If it does not function, you will see very few sparks or no sparks at all. Now, if this happens, repairing the spark plug is of utmost importance.

I will suggest that you locate the source of the damage first. The porcelain insulator may have cracks in it, and that might damage one of the electrodes. However, it could also be burnt out or eroded.

Another cause could be carbon buildup; if a lot of carbon builds up in the plug, then it can easily malfunction. To find out if there are issues with the plug, get a spark plug tester. You will see a strong spark between the tester terminals, and if this happens, then know that it’s working fine. But if there is no spark, then you will have to replace the plug.

2. Rewind Spring

The rewind spring could also be a reason behind the machine not starting. This spring is what allows the starter rope to recoil into the pulley placed inside. If it malfunctions, the rope will not recoil, and that would not allow the engine to start.

Now the best part is that this is easily replaceable. If the rewind spring is causing problems, take it out and replace it with a new one. In case you are unable to do it, call a mechanic for help.

3. The Carburetor

Is the engine sputtering in the beginning and then suddenly stopping? Then the issue could be related to the carburetor. This part works to mix gasoline and air, forming a combustible gas. Without it, the machine will not start at all.

Now, in this case, there are 2 ways to go about it. If you have an idea about using screwdrivers and opening parts, then you can open the section and use a carburetor re-builder kit. This one usually comes with diaphragms, gaskets, and seals. But if you do not have prior experience, get the part replaced, and that should be cost-effective.

4. The Spark Arrestor

This is a small screen that is present inside, and it prevents the engine from causing sparks while functioning. My husband told me about this and warned me that this could cause problems if it’s too dirty. Over time, the arrestor can get congested and clogged with a lot of dirt and soot. This could prevent the engine from starting or could cause malfunctioning.

My husband suggested that I take it out and clean it well. And in case it is damaged, you will need to find a replacement. Otherwise, put the clean one in and check if the leaf blower starts.

5. The Fuel Filter

A clogged fuel filter can be another reason behind the blower not starting. Now, are you wondering what clogs a filter? If you leave fuel in the tank for a long time when the leaf blower is not in use, then some parts of it evaporate. What remains is a very sticky liquid that can clog up the filter. But you can clean the filter and then try turning the machine on.

Also, ensure that you always drain the fuel before storing the product. That way, this problem will never occur.

6. Recoil Starter

There is a recoil starter pulley present inside the blower, which winds up the starter rope. Now, if this pulley is damaged, then the starter rope cannot coil back, and hence, the machine will not start. In this case, you have to check the pulley.

Use its instruction booklet to find out the location of the pulley and check its parts. If it is damaged, you will have to replace it. There is no way to mend this, and hence, it will cost you money to get it replaced.

7. The Ignition Coil

This part sends voltage to the plug, allowing the engine to run normally. Now, if this part is defective, then the engine will again not start. But before you touch this, it is best to first check the spark plug, carburetor, and fuel filter.

Also, you will need an ignition coil tester to help you check for malfunctioning parts. I would recommend taking it to the shop if this happens.

Final Words

There can be other issues with the leaf blower as well. Determine the exact problem before trying to fix it.

It might be vibrating too much or could leave behind a lot of smoke. In such cases, check the parts and see if they are alright. Cleaning the filter can also help in getting it to function normally.

But remember, if the engine is causing problems, you will have to take it to a workshop. They will help in replacing the necessary parts. Once it is fixed, store your blower in a clean and dry place, empty the tank and ensure that no fuel remains inside.

With this, I will take your leave. If you have any further concerns regarding the topic, let me know in the comment section below.

Until next time.
