How To Fix A Stihl Weed Eater Pull String

Without a doubt, a Stihl weed eater is one of the most important tools to maintain a neat and beautiful lawn.

However, the pull string of a weed eater can get damaged or wear out with regular usage. That’s when you’ll have to fix it to keep using it for mowing the lawn.

So, if you’re wondering how to go about it, this guide is for you.

How To Fix A Stihl Weed Eater Pull String?

One of the most common challenges home gardeners face is that their weed eater doesn’t start. While there are many things that can go wrong, one likely reason can be the broken pull string.

When that happens, you can fix it quickly at home without making trips to a local engine shop. Here I’ve mentioned a few simple steps that you can follow to fix the pull string of your weed eater.

Step 1: Remove Spark Plug Wire And The Cover

Before fixing the pull string, make sure you remove the spark plug wire for your safety. Look for the pull start on the rear of the machine and remove the starter cover with a screwdriver. Rotate it counterclockwise to unfasten and remove the screws.

Step 2: Remove The Curved Spring Clip

After removing the cover, you’ll have to search for the curved spring clip and detach it along with the washer and pawl. Also, dispose of the old rope by pulling it out through the starter handle.

Step 3: Insert The New Rope

Moving on, use the old rope and cut the new one according to its length with a knife. Next, make a single overhand knot on one end and insert the other inside the start pull handle. When done, pull the knot securely into the handle notch, thread the rope in the starter rotor and tie a knot.

Put the rotor back on the rotor post and rotate it from one side to another to activate the rewind spring.

Step 4: Lay Down Pawl And Washer

Now, you’ll have to lay down the pawl, washer, and spring clip on the starter post and rotate the rotor six times counterclockwise to add pressure to the rotor assembly.

Step 5: Release The Rotor

After rotating, release the rotor and usher the new rope on it gradually. When the rope settles in the coil assembly, put the cover back and fasten the screws to secure it.

Final Words

Fixing the pull string of a Stihl weed eater isn’t a Herculean task and can be done easily without going to a professional. Also, make sure you wear gloves and take all the necessary precautions while doing the task.

With that, I’ve reached the end of my guide on “how to fix a Stihl weed eater pull string.” Hopefully, you’ll be able to fix the pull string of your weed eater without any difficulty. But, if you find it challenging, calling a professional will be the best option.

Till next time, take care!
