A well-maintained car headliner not just offers a comfortable feeling to its occupants but also adds a touch of elegance to its interior.
As such, you must ensure that it is always in top-notch condition. I have been driving since I was 17 and have developed a special thing for cars over the years. Last week, I was driving my neighbor, Jessica to work, when she commented that my car's roof lining was sagging and that it needed fixing.
Honestly, I was a bit offended as I always try to make sure that my car looks visually appealing. But, having said that, I realized that it had been quite a while since I last paid attention to the car's headliner and that Jessica was indeed right.
Since I was alone at home, it was completely up to me to get it fixed. Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and in this article, I will be telling you how to fix car roof lining without removing it.
So, without further ado, let's get started!
What Is The Roof Lining Of A Car?
Before I proceed, I will tell you what a car roof lining is. Often called a headliner, it is nothing but a piece of fabric attached to the roof framing inside a car. This provides a few benefits not just to the car but to the occupants as well.
- It helps in regulating the temperature inside by absorbing cold and heat from outside
- Buffers noise from outside
- Adds a touch of elegance to the aesthetics of the interior of the car
Now, headliners have several layers of materials inside them. While some car manufacturers integrate counter-measures for head impact while producing roof linings, others utilize LED lighting technology to provide proper lighting inside the car.
The roof linings also feature tricot knit fabric to ensure soft touch, sleek, and uniform appearance. This fabric is further stuck to melted polyurethane foam and then finally glued to the inner roof of your car.
How To Fix Car Roof Lining Without Removing?
From eliminating the outside noise to keeping the car warm and fuzzy, I am sure you’ll agree on the numerous benefits that the roof lining provides. Before I begin, let me tell you that replacing a headliner is a bit expensive, so it's best to fix it yourself.
Here are a few ways in which you can fix your car's roof lining without a hassle.
1. Using Steam Cleaner And Paint Roller Duo
One of the most effective ways to fix a sagging roof lining is using a steam cleaner and paint roller. First, apply the steam cleaner to condense the glue present in the headliner, which will help in reattaching it to the frame. Upon doing that, use a paint roller to set the fabric evenly without any wrinkle or crease.
I highly recommend using this technique when the fabric starts to sag around the edges.
2. Using Clear-Headed Twist Pin
Also known as saggy stoppers, clear-headed twist pins are undoubtedly a highly functional and affordable way of ensuring that the headliner stays in place.
Don't worry; it won't damage the car roof lining with holes. Hence, it is considered a better option than conventional pins or glue, as they both may damage the fabric if you are not careful while repairing.
3. Simply Consider Pinning It Down
Another budget-friendly way of fixing your car's headliner without removing it is by using sequin pins to pin it down. All you have to do is push them through the fabric of the headliner so that they remain stuck to it.
Furthermore, to make it look beautiful, you can even arrange them the way you like.
4. Applying The Good-Old Glue
Using glue is perhaps the easiest of all the methods that I have mentioned so far and works best if the roof lining is sagging partly around its edges.
You need to get your hands on a headlining adhesive from the local automobile repair shop, as normal glue will not work in this case. I strongly advise applying a spray can adhesive as it will dispense the glue evenly on the surface.
Additional Tips To Protect The Headliner
Believe it or not, heat is the biggest culprit that causes the sagging of roof lining. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat makes the fabric detach itself from the roof framing.
Hence, you should take proper measures to extend the lifespan of your car's headliner and here are a few tips that you can follow.
1. Park Your Car Under A Shade
Whenever possible, park your car under a shade, especially when you know that it is going to stay there for a long time. Doing this will protect it from the direct rays of the sun and ensure that the interior and exterior remain free from damage.
2. Consider Waxing Your Car Often
This is my personal favorite as I wax my car ever so often. It creates a layer of protection on the car, thereby safeguarding it from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.
Also, note that waxing varies from car to car, but I highly recommend it all the same.
3. Wash Your Car Weekly
Even though getting your car washed once a week may seem challenging, it is essential. It will help remove all the dust, dirt particles, and protect the paint, which is essential for keeping it cool and dry.
Final Words
I have finally come to the end of my guide; hopefully, you have gained some practical insights on how to fix your car roof lining without removing it.
Before I sign off, I strongly recommend regular maintenance to keep your car in top shape. On that note, I think I’ll wash my car now.
