After that, you’ll have to change the spring because that’s where the problem usually lies. In some instances, the cords require replacement, so you may need to do that.
While most models require extra disassembly, some can be fixed by removing the plastic cover and screws. The hard work required depends upon your model.
To get to the recoil mechanism, here’s what you’ll have to do:
First off, you’ll have to remove the trimmer shaft from the engine housing by unfastening the screws that hold it. After that, pull off the carburetor bracket with needle-nose pliers to disconnect the throttle cable and detach the shaft.
Next, disconnect the spark plug and insert a piece of rope or rag into its hole. This must be done very carefully to prevent the engine from rotating while removing the clutch drum.
To remove the clutch drum, you’ll have to use a screwdriver and rotate it counterclockwise. After that, use a flat-headed screwdriver and a hammer to rotate the clutch plate counterclockwise. Remove the clutch plates and repeat the procedure to unscrew the others.
After removing the clutch drum and plates, disassemble the motor housing by loosening the screws. Finally, remove the plate to access the recoil mechanism. Also, keep in mind that dismantling varies from model to model.
Now you’ll have to service the recoil mechanism and follow the same procedure in reverse to reassemble the weed eater.
