How To Fix Welding Distortion

Let’s face it, distortions and shrinkages are a part of welding, and both professionals and beginners face this problem. But there are ways to deal with it.

Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and I love working on different kinds of DIY projects, be it gardening or creating furniture. I wanted to make fences for my garden and that is when I first came across the process of welding.

It wasn’t something I had done before, and I was initially very scared that I would distort the surface.

However, my husband has considerable experience with welding, and he told me all about how to fix welding distortion.

These generally occur because the base plate expands and contracts when heat is applied. But heat is inevitable as the welding arc will be heated up when you are connecting joints, and that could lead to distortions in the form of bending.

So,. in this guide, I will tell you about the types of distortions and what to do about them. Dive in!

Types Of Distortion

There are different types of distortions that can occur depending on the kind of material you are using and its thickness. I am listing them down here so that you can have a clear idea about the issues that you’re likely to face during welding.

1. Longitudinal Shrinkage

It is caused when too much pressure is applied parallel to the weld, which could create distortions. You might also observe perpendicular shrinkage in this case and thermal correction can help in fixing it.

2. Dishing And Bowing

The weld has to be well placed and balanced on the cross-section of the neutral axis, but distortions can occur if this placement is incorrect. Longitudinal shrinkages may occur at this point, and that can cause the particular section to curve and bend.

3. Angular Distortion

Angular distortion can occur a number of times when you are welding, and it takes place when the material bends or curves. It usually happens when excessive force is applied from one end of the neutral axis. My husband compared this with transverse shrinkage, which I will discuss below.

4. Transverse Shrinkage

Transverse shrinkage occurs when the distortion happens because of contractual movements perpendicular to the weld. You can see it running through the cross-section of the weld in a vertical direction, and it does take time to fix such shrinkages.

5.  Buckling

It happens mostly when working with thin metal surfaces and structures, and the metal can bend or curve during the process. The curving will occur along the width, and I am not too fond of this form of distortion. It takes a lot of time to get it back into shape, which just makes the entire process longer and more cumbersome.

How To Fix Welding Distortion?

Now that I have discussed the issues with you, here are some of the most effective ways to fix welding distortions. My husband told me about these methods in detail, and I am sharing them here with you so that you can make an informed choice.

1. Thermal Correction

For this technique, you can apply heat to the distorted areas, and it is expected to spread uniformly throughout the area. My husband also told me about spot heating, where one can use heat to fix the convex bends and spots on thin metal sheets.

The heat, in this case, can be applied from the base, and some people also use line heating to take care of angular distortions. Here, you need to apply the heat from the other side of your weld and maintain a straight line while working.

2. Using A Hammer

You can use any hard tool to fix welding distortions and make them flat again. Yes, it will take some time and a lot of effort on your side, but you should be very happy with the results.

I will suggest that you only try this method if you are physically strong or have prior experience working with hammers or other hard tools. Otherwise, you can ask for help from professionals or an experienced friend for the job.

How To Control Welding Distortions

There are ways in which you can control welding distortions, and here I will talk about the methods.

First of all, eliminating and reducing the weld passes will lead to lesser shrinkage. In this regard, always choose large electrodes with fewer passes than smaller ones with more passes.

Also, ensure that you do not over-weld, especially on smaller joints. Remember that more metal on the joints would just lead to more chances of distortion.

Moreover, you can try to peen when the weld cools so that the stress concentration is released to a great extent. This would, in turn, make the beads thinner as you stretch them, and there would be fewer chances of shrinkage. My husband suggested that I pair it up with a thermal stress mechanism through which I can control the cooling and heating.

Lastly, pre-bending can go a long way in eliminating weld distortions, which involves pre-setting, pre-bending, and pre-springing all the parts beforehand.

Final Words

Please remember that you should not keep welding for a long time at one go. This will only lead the surface temperature to shoot up, causing more chances of distortions. This is a tip that my husband gave me, and I have been following it meticulously.

Also, you can check the amount of heat per unit volume that would cause the material to expand or contract. This way, you can ensure that the temperature stays below that level as much as possible. Furthermore, it would reduce the chances of distortions and ensure that you have a stress-free process.

With this, I will end my guide, and I promise to be back with such informative articles soon. Till then, stay safe and take care
