How To Frame A Closet In Basement

Adding some extra storage space in the basement is always a practical idea.

And the first step to creating a functional closet is to frame it properly, keeping every specification and alignment in check. I framed mine with my husband’s help, and it was a fun weekend project.

So, do you want to know how to frame a basement closet? Read my guide for all the details!

How To Frame A Closet In Basement

Although tactful, framing isn’t a lengthy process, and you can ace the task in a day or so. Here are the major steps you can follow to frame your closet efficiently:

1. Build The Frame

First and foremost, you’ll have to measure the closet space and mark its outline using chalk. Then, draw the position of the door, leaving an appropriate opening. For instance, for a 24 x 80-inch door, mark at least 25.25 inches to accommodate the hinges, door framing, or any other imperfections conveniently.

Once all the outlines are in place, cut wood pieces in their size using a compound miter saw and lay them flat on the ground. Now, you can do all the drilling, strengthening, and anchoring work on the wood pieces.

Moving on, secure the basement closet foundation framing through the base plates using masonry screws. You’ll have to follow the same outline for positioning the header plates of the closet walls on the ceiling.

2. Construct The Door

Another important aspect of framing your closet is getting the door right. So, cut two 82 feet long pieces if you are going by the standard size. Place them 25.25 inches apart at the opening and attach them to the studs.

After that, you’ll have to make a door header using a 29.25-inch wooden piece and nail it to the vertical piece of the doorway. Next, cut four pieces to fit between the base and the top plate of the closet. Make sure to space them out evenly and insert them above the door evenly.

3. Finishing Touches

For finishing your closet frame, insulate the wall studs by stapling some insulating paper. Lining up the wall with sheetrock and installing drywall is also an excellent idea. When all that is done, finally erect the door framing in the cupboard and install the door using door hinges.

You can then mold the wood along the baseline and around the doors, and finish by painting the walls.

Final Words

Now you know what it takes to frame a basement closet. It can be done in three steps - marking, constructing, and finishing. However, if you aren’t much of a handyperson, I suggest leaving it to a professional.

That said, it’s a wrap for the day with one final tip - leave enough space in the openings to fit in door frames and hinges.

Until next time!
