How To Get Rid Of Bulb Weeds

Bulb weeds are highly invasive, and they feed on the nutrients of the garden plants.

Usually, bulb weeds are not harmful if their growth is limited but, if they spread into your flower beds, you need to remove them immediately. However, removing bulb weeds can be a cumbersome task, so today, I’ll talk all about how to get rid of bulb weeds to keep your garden healthy.

Ways To Remove Bulb Weeds From Garden

1. Spray Herbicides

Spraying herbicides is always an effective and easy way to kill unwanted bulb weeds and flower bulbs in your garden. Herbicides with glyphosate work well on bulb weeds but, be careful while using any herbicide and make sure it doesn’t kill other plants.

Always spray the herbicide on a hot and dry day as it won’t penetrate the tight bulb in cold temperatures. You need to apply it directly to the foliage so that it can travel to the roots of the bulb weeds and kill them.

I’ll also suggest that you wear your protective goggles and gloves while working with any herbicide.

2. Cover The Bulbs With Plastic

If you’re looking for a non-chemical way to get rid of the bulb weeds, try covering them with black plastic to arrest their growth. Cover the entire area of bulb weeds with plastic by using stakes or rocks for some weeks, which will prevent the sunlight from reaching them.

Furthermore, the plastic covering will help dry out the soil around the bulb weeds, so the bulbs will die gradually without access to water and moisture. However, once the weeds are dead and you remove the plastic covering, it might take some time for the soil in that area to regain its normal properties.

3. Pull Them Out

If you want to prevent the bulb weeds from progressing into your flower beds, it is best to deal with them before the appearance of the small foliage above the ground. Once the foliage appears above ground, you can simply reach and pull them out.

But, there’s always a chance that some parts of the roots might get left behind when you’re pulling out the bulb weeds from the ground. Hence, it is best to use a hand shovel to dig wide holes around the bulb weeds. In that way, you can dig deep enough and remove the entire root system to prevent their regrowth.

Final Thoughts

Bulb weeds can be very stubborn, and you might require a lot of effort and perseverance to get rid of them. So, you may need to repeat the spraying, covering, and digging methods several times to get rid of the bulb weeds permanently.

I also think that proper lawn maintenance and lawn care can greatly help reduce these weeds. On that, I’ll sign off and let you devise an effective strategy. Happy gardening!
