Excessive weed growth is something that every gardening enthusiast dreads.
And when it’s a pesky and fast-spreading variety, such as dichondra, the situation might worsen quickly. Having tackled this weed on my lawn many times, I know how stubborn it can be. So, to make things simpler for you, I thought of penning this guide on how to get rid of dichondra in lawn.
Before you start treating the weed, you need to be sure that it’s indeed dichondra and not any other variety. If you’re not careful in identifying the weed, you’ll end up using the wrong treatment method, ultimately resulting in a waste of money and time. So, here are some of the traits of dichondra that you should know about:
Once you’ve identified dichondra correctly, you can go ahead and locate the areas where the weed is thriving. That way, you can focus the treatment on those particular areas, so let’s look at the two simplest removal techniques:
A herbicide is the most effective and convenient option when it comes to removing dichondra from a larger area. And as per my experience in dealing with this weed, I’d suggest going for the Roundup herbicide. Coming with a powerful compound called glyphosate, it can eliminate dichondra within 4 hours to 2 days.
That said, the herbicide is a non-selective weed killer, which implies it will eliminate any plant it comes in contact with. This makes it essential to apply it only to the dichondra to prevent killing any beneficial plants. Also, remember to wear protective gear, such as gloves and a face mask, while applying the herbicide.
Like other weeds, you can take out dichondra by hand if it’s growing in a smaller area. But you’ll need to be patient, as a thorough removal takes time.
Note that it’s always better to wear gloves while pulling the dichondra to keep the hands clean. The job may be a bit difficult in case the soil is dry and compact, so begin by watering the surrounding area to loosen the soil.
After you’ve watered the area, hold the weeds firmly from their base and shake them roughly. You may also want to dig deeper to reach the roots before pulling the weed to separate it completely from the soil, ensuring that nothing remains of the root.
After you’ve successfully eliminated all the dichondra in the lawn, you’ll need to ensure this weed doesn’t grow back. And for that, you must keep the lawn well-maintained, fertilized, and address moisture issues.
So, don’t delay freeing your lawn from this unwanted weed to maintain the health of your garden plants.
