How To Get Rid of Lawn Grubs. Natural or chemical?

Nearly every lawn has a few grubs that usually dot cause any problems unless their population increases. These pests are a natural part of the ecosystem, however, if you find a lot of grubs per square foot, you'll need to eliminate them before they damage your lawn.

There are different methods you can choose to eliminate grubs from your lawn including natural organic options or using pesticides.

How to check if you have grub worms in your lawn

The most common sign of grub worms is irregular brown patches on your lawn that you can pull out easily. This means the grubs have chewed through the roots making it easy to separate from the soil. Another sign is increased animal activity. Grubs are food for a lot of animals including birds, skunks, and raccoons, so if you notice many holes in your lawn from the pecking and digging, there are lots of grubs in your lawn.

To be sure, do a soil test by removing a square foot of grass about 3 inches deep from a dry, brown patch and if you find more than 10 grubs, you have a serious infestation.

You can choose to use the natural organic option or use chemicals.

Natural options

Beneficial nematodes

These microscopic parasites are naturally occurring invade the grub's body and releases bacteria that multiply and eventually kill the host grub. This method is very effective, but it takes about 3 years for nematodes to establish a large colony that can kill lots of grubs. The best time to apply nematodes is in the afternoon and make sure you water them thoroughly before and after application.

Milky spore

A bacteria disease that’s deadly to white grubs that become Japanese beetles. It’s a great preventative measure that will keep away Japanese beetles in your lawn, but it will take a few years to develop enough beneficial spores to get rid of the grubs in your lawn. You’ll need to apply this treatment a couple of times a year for 1-3 years and this will act as a biological control for 10-15 years.

Chemical options

Curative

These help to kill the immature larvae and its best applied in late summer or early fall when the young grubs are actively feeding on the roots. Water your lawn before and after applying the curative pesticide so it gets soaked into the soil.

Preventative

This will help reduce the risk of your lawn getting infested with grubs. This stops the future generations of grubs from taking over your lawn, but it has very little effect on the young grubs already on your lawn.

Conclusion

If using the natural options doesn’t work, you can go for a strong pesticide, but you have to understand the potential effects on your family, pets, and other animals. However, once you can detect the grub worms and know how to effectively eliminate them, you'll be more prepared to deal with the problem more effectively.
