Binomial Name: (Potentilla norvegica)
Rough Cinquefoil, also called Norwegian Cinquefoil, is an annual and biennial broadleaf herb that also grows as a short-lived perennial, occasionally. It belongs to the family "Rosaceae” in the Genus “Potentilla”. Rosaceae is the family of Roses as well, which, includes shrubs, herbs, and trees and they're distributed throughout the world. But, Northern Hemisphere dominates these species. Rough Cinquefoil often grows on medium sandy and gravel soils in wastelands, meadows, stream banks, arable fields, gardens, and ornamental landscapes having sufficient moisture at the time of germination. Generally, it succeeds in growing from sea level to 6000 feet above that.
Origin and Distribution
Rough Cinquefoil has its lineages from most of Europe, Asia, and portions of North America. Otherwise, it has cosmopolitan dissemination and is found in every part of the world except for Antarctica. Overall, Rough Cinquefoil belongs to the utmost frugally important family that includes stone fruits, berries, and roses. The pervasiveness to the tropical rainforest and deserts is little restricted due to moisture variation and dry conditions. Besides being a member of an economically important family, Rough Cinquefoil exists as an introduced herb in all states of the US except for North America, where it owns native status. Its occurrence in either side of the Cascades crest in Washington, California to Alaska, and east transversely to North America and the Atlantic Coast are both native and introduced in wastelands and irrigation sources.
Rough Cinquefoil-Identification
Rough Cinquefoil may grow 8-20 inches in height with multiple branching and occasionally give rise to two or more stems from a single root while the stems are throughout hairy. Rough Cinquefoil has compound leaves, which are alternately arranged, and each leaf consists of 3 leaflets at the end of the petiole. Generally, the leaflets are oblong to round having sharp and forward teeth. At an earlier stage of leaflets growth, they resemble strawberry leaves. Flowers are about ¼th of an inch with 5-dull yellow petals. The stamens form a ring with a cluster of tiny pistils that mature to form many clusters of seeds measuring 1/25th of an inch, pale brown or yellow. Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer.
Rough Cinquefoil-Propagation and Lifecycle
Usually, Rough Cinquefoil sets seeds in late spring to mid-summer. Rough Cinquefoil only propagates through seed, and an individual plant can produce about 13000 seeds. Rough cinquefoil seeds may sprout immediately in Northern Hemisphere whereas, they may be dormant in the southern climate. Seed dissemination takes place in several ways but, precipitation, wind, and pollinators contribute largely in moving seeds to different locations. Rough Cinquefoils can easily pass through the digestive tracts of livestock and birds, remaining viable for several years.
Fun Facts About Rough Cinquefoil
- Without a floral scent, Rough Cinquefoil foliage closely resembles the strawberry plant.
- Another English name “Five Fingers” also exists for Rough Cinquefoil.
- Rough Cinquefoil infusion is said to be herbal tonic dysentery, fever, and diarrhea.
Rough Cinquefoil-Prevention and Control
Cultural Control
Culturally controlling Rough Cinquefoil involves hoeing, hand pulling, and mowing. Both hoeing and hand pulling are easy when the herb attains 4-5 leaves stage, and Rough cinquefoil is growing actively. Always prefer hand-pulling when there is reasonable moisture in the soil and Cinquefoil hasn't flowered yet. Rough Cinquefoil sets seeds earlier in areas with high surface temperature and low moisture. Feeding the turfgrasses with high nitrogen fertilizers can trigger Rough Cinquefoil growth that delays seed setting. Repeated mowing is also equally effective for controlling them.
