How to Get Rid of Sandbur

Binomial Name: (Cenchrus echinatus)

Sandbur or Sandspur herb is from the widely distributed family of grasses called “Poaceae” in the Genus “Cenchrus”, and it’s the species of monocots flowering plants. The members of the Poaceae family are narrow-leaved grasses that include the majority of the cereal crops including, Rice, Wheat, Maize, Barley, and Millets. Sandburs dominantly exist throughout the grasslands, and the species planted as ornamental turfgrasses also belong to the same species. Overall, the Poaceae family directly offers more than 50% of dietary fibers for human consumption. Sandburs, on the other hand, survive growing from sea level to 4000 feet above that in sandy, and gravelly soils, and speed up spread in moisture-rich conditions.

Origin and Distribution

Sandbur is a violent invader in the dry areas of Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico from its lineages in the southern United States, Central and South United States. Sandbur predominantly exists in the neglected area of the Southern Region. Arizona and New Mexico declared it a noxious weed whereas, the warm sandy regions of North Africa, North America, Europe, Asia, and South Pacific are also among its origin. During the initial stages of growth, Sandbur can be an ideal forage but, once it set seeds, its sharp spine burs can bruise livestock that also spread its different sites.

Sandbur-Identification

Sandbur prefers to grow at sunny locations where it could gain a height up to 3 feet. Sandbur is a summer weed that is best recognizable during the vegetative growth stage. The leaf collar makes a bond between the sheath and the leaf blade. The sandbur collar contains a membrane that shows fine strips as it is cut with scissors, besides being hairy and light in color. The leaf blades look smooth and twisted that measure between 3 to 5 inches in length. The leaf sheath looks detaching from the stem with light hairs on the margin but smooth and flattened in appearance. However, the flowering stage allows identifying Sandbur completely as its inflorescence is a terminal spike measuring up to 3 inches in length containing an even number of spiny burs, usually between 6 to 20.

Sandbur- Propagation and Lifecycle

Seed germination in Sandbur can start when the surface temperature reaches 52°F, and the peak germination temperature remains about 75°F. The Emergence from the seed may occur till late autumn if the temperature varies between the adapted ranges, provided the viable seeds still exist on the soil surface or in the turfgrasses. Usually, the growth is more prevalent in sunny locations. Sandbur seeds produced inside a bur may retain their viability in the soil for years. Rhizomes and stolon if, produce have no role in spreading Sandbur in the field. However, the roots arising from the lower side of the stem allow them to form mats. The seed dispersion is both through wind and water, while small birds can also help in seed dissemination. Often the seed germination takes place in late spring that continues through early summer, while seed dissemination is in late summer through late autumn.

Fun Facts About Sandbur

  • The sharp burs can puncture bike tires and stick with the shoes' sole and clothing.
  • Sandbur is a rich source of Vitamin C and fiber for the livestock and is available during the late autumn when it is difficult to find other feed.
  • Sandbur extracts have antioxidant properties besides helping in weight loss.

Sandbur-Prevention and Control

Cultural Control

Maintaining only a vigorous and dense turfgrass could help the gardeners to suppress Sandbur. Other cultural practices like early mowing and fertilization at the start of spring are also helpful. Additionally, planting only adaptable grasses strains will check the growth of Sandbur in lawns and garden beds. Application of nitrogen in spring and phosphorus and potash at the start of summer also suppress Sandbur.

Chemical Control

Control using Pre-Emergent Herbicides

Monterey LG 5130 Weed Impede

Weed Impede contains 40.4% Oryzalin, which is a pre-emergent herbicide to control a variety of annual grasses and some broadleaf herbs especially, Sandburs when they exist in garden beds, ornamental settings, patios, and walkways. Weed Impede is very effective in stopping weed growth from the seed, and its effect could last for nearly 6-months. If the targeted areas are bare lands, Glyphosate addition can kill existing weeds whereas, the Weed Impede could stop Sandbur from germinating from the seed. Always manage to water the areas once you have sprayed them with Weed Impede.
