Binomial Name: (Oxalis stricta)
Yellow Woodsorrel is a broadleaf, annual herb that also grows perennially and belongs to the family “Oxalidaceae” in the Genus “Oxalis”. Yellow Woodsorrel is commonly a weed of grassy lawns, gardens, and fields, including meadows, woodlands, and disturbed areas in most North America. It prefers to grow in the full sun But, survives partial shade. It grows on both moist and dry soils with higher pH values and prefers both sandy and loamy soils. The soil fertility is not a hindrance in growing Yellow Woodsorrel, and it can establish on low fertility soils. The leaves and flowers are edible and used for making an orange dye after boiling the entire plant. Yellow Woodsorrel succeeds in growing up to 8200 feet above sea level.
Origin and Distribution
Yellow Woodsorrel is a cosmopolitan herb that is native to Eurasia and North America. It is also among the widest spreader turf weeds that compete with them for nutrients and moisture. It also grows at disturbed and neglected locations in meadows and woodlands across the US. Due to its aggressive growth patterns, it can grow in low fertility soils, where it soon becomes a violent weed in turfgrasses and garden beds. It boosts growth in spring and fall whereas, it can grow year-round in a warmer climate. Its colonies exist in 46 states but, Eastern US and Canada support its triggering growth.
Yellow Woodsorrel- Identification
The leaves of Yellow Woodsorrel are arranged alternately on the stem. Usually, the leaves have long petioles. Leaves form a palmate structure when they divide into 3-leaflets having faintly hairy margins. Leaflets measure about 1 to 2 cm in length. No stipules are present. Stems may be ascending or erect that measure up to 50 cm in height. Stems contain multi-cellular long, crooked, and soft hairs. Yellow flowers emerge from the leaf axils that range between 5-7 per terminal. Flowers consist of erect seed pods enclosed in yellow petals measuring between 5 to 9 mm in length. Seed pods measure up to 15 mm in length with septate hairs.
Yellow Woodsorrel- Propagation and Lifecycle
Yellow Woodsorrel exists as an annual plant and sometimes a short-lived perennial depending on the type of climates it grows. Propagation takes place both by seed and underground stems. As seed pods exist at a right angle with the stems that contain five chambers, and each chamber holds 10 seeds. On ripening, the seed pods open with an explosion by a minor disturbance and launch the seeds to 10 feet distance. Seed germination may happen in the same year or upcoming spring. Additionally, Yellow Woodsorrel forms colonies from the rhizomes whereas, the majority of the population grows from the seeds.

Yellow Woodsorrel- Prevention and Control
Cultural Control
Maintaining a healthy and dense turf could compete and prevent Yellow Woodsorrel in lawns. Hand pulling or weeding are the most successful methods to prevent infestation when the Yellow Woodsorrel is in the 4th to 6th week of growth before forming capsules that contain seed. Once established, it is difficult to eradicate all stolon from the turfgrasses. Hand-weeding and Hand -pulling need sufficient moisture to confirm that the entire plant removes. Remove plant debris, stolon, and rhizomes from the field safely to avoid germination.
Chemical Control
Control using Pre-Emergent Herbicides
Roundup Quick Pro
It mixes Glyphosate (73.3%) with Diquat dibromide (2.9%), and both ingredients are from the non-selective herbicides category. Diquat is pretty quick at burning and magic behind this product whereas, Glyphosate is a slow reactor that takes nearly 10 days to target weeds but, higher temperature triggers its performance. Together they make an excellent formulation that kills everything that comes under their coverage. Use only the patios, walkways, and bare areas where you don’t need vegetation. If a lawn is being prepared for planting turfgrasses, use at least one month before planting them.
