Whatever the reason, growing moss can be quite a task without knowing the proper techniques.
During my initial days of gardening, I tried my hands at growing moss in my lawns without any proper understanding. And yes, you have guessed it right- it was a bad idea. The perfect moss is the one that suits your requirements the best. Suppose you want a moss that has good height and can endure food traffic well. In that case, it is best to go for Atrichum undulatum, crown moss, or starburst moss, for this purpose. All these varieties are excellent choices if you are looking for good horizontal coverage.
Once in full bloom, your garden will start looking like a beautiful expense of a green meadow. But make sure that the soil is moist and the moss receives ample shade to grow well.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a more versatile moss, then you can go for varieties like white moss or pincushion moss. They are found in residential gardens all across the globe as they are pretty easy to grow. These varieties grow to provide incredible coverage because they can easily adapt to a wide range of temperature, water, and soil conditions.
Unless you prepare the base well before planting the moss, it is likely to be an unsuccessful attempt. The most important thing to remember is that you should completely stop putting lime in the area. If the pH of the soil is not conducive, then moss (or any other type of grass, for that matter) will not grow well.
Most of the moss varieties that I have tried growing in my garden grew best in soil that was not too acidic. As a result, I did not have to use an acidifier to maintain the pH level.
However, you will also find some variants that remain unaffected by the soil's pH level. So, it is incredibly crucial that you study your moss well before planting it. Otherwise, its chances of survival will go down severely.
The other important thing to take note of is the availability of water in the area where you are planting the moss. You need to ensure that there is a steady flow of water throughout the year. If this is not possible naturally, then I’d suggest installing oscillating sprinklers. Since I have covered quite a bit of the lawn with moss, I have opted for an effective misting system.
Installing this equipment is really helpful as all you have to do is set the timer, and everything else will be taken care of.
If you have any difficulty understanding how much water your moss needs, especially during the dry months, then let me break it down. During hot spells of the year, make sure that you spray water at least four times a day for a span of three to five minutes.
Without the right spot, your plan of growing a moss lawn will invariably backfire. And one of the first things to consider in this regard is to choose a location that does not get too much direct sunlight.
From the different types of moss plants that I have grown over the years, it has been pretty evident to me that moss, in general, likes cooler temperatures better. So, it is essential that you check how much sunlight the area gets over the year. I’d strongly recommend choosing a spot that has big trees with even bigger canopies that will eventually provide a good amount of shade.
However, if you are adamant about growing moss in areas that receive a good amount of sunlight, it’s not an impossible task. When I started gardening and did not have much of an understanding, I took the help of my gardener friends to select the species. So, you need to take special care to choose a species that can survive well in the sun.
Other than that, you must consider the rain and wind patterns. If you have planted the moss in soil that gets easily eroded, you have to pay special attention to handle run-offs. But rest assured that once the moss roots are well established, they will come in very handy for controlling soil erosion.
And I have a pro tip for you: contrary to popular belief that moss cannot handle pressure, you can actually walk and sit on the plants after planting them. This will help them easily get attached to the ground.
