How to grow green onions. (And other onions you can grow at home.)

Green onions or spring onions can be used for so many different things and are very easy to grow. So if you love topping them on your dishes and salads, you can utilize your indoor and outdoor space to grow them.

There are several methods you can use to grow green onions even if you don’t have a garden. You can use cutting to regrow green onions, plant green onion seeds in your garden, and plant them indoors in a container.

Regrow from cuttings

This is the easiest way to green onions as long as you have a root end you can regrow the onions. So make sure the root end is attached so they stay fresher for longer.

  • Cut off the stems about an inch above the roots and place the roots in a shallow glass jar with water to keep the roots hydrated.
  • Place the jar in a bright, sunny spot and leave them overnight for a few days and keep checking to see if the roots stay submerged.
  • Change the water regularly to keep it fresh and after a few days, you'll notice new growth will appear.
  • After a week new growth will appear and if you want them to keep growing longer, you can plant them in some soil in your garden or a container with potting soil.
  • Plant them about 1 1/2” deep and firm the soil gently around and water.

Growing from seeds

  • Plant the onions ¼" deep and 2" apart on loose, fertile, and well-drained soil in your garden with full sun.
  • Green onions germinate slowly so it can take about 2 weeks to see any growth, but keep the soil evenly moist at all times.
  • Once they’ve sprouted, water regularly and keep the area weeded. Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer for optimum growth and harvest when they reach about 8 inches.

From seed in container

  • Green onions do well planted indoors in any container 6” deep and placed near a bright, sunny window or under grow lights.
  • Space the seeds 2" apart in the container with well-drained potting soil and make sure it stays evenly moist.
  • Place the container outdoors and only bring it indoors before the first fall frost so you can grow your green onions all season.
