Many of us have fond memories of playing video games as kids, don't we?
There was a time when my son had a daily ritual in which he'd invite his friends over and play on the Super Nintendo. On the occasion when none of the friends could make it, I'd step in as Luigi, and we'd have fun times together.
While cleaning the basement, I recently found the old Super Nintendo system tucked away in a box. I had the afternoon to myself that day, so I decided to unpack the system and bring it into the living room. When my son came over, we were both excited to see if we could fix it up and get the system running.
After several tries, we finally got it to start on our HDTV and played a game of Super Mario just like old times. And so I thought, why keep this information with myself? My readers could benefit from it too! Hi! I'm Stacy Smith, and today I've decided to curate a step-by-step guide to connect your Super Nintendo to your modern TV.
So without further ado, let's find out "how to hook up Super Nintendo to HDTV."
1. Find AV Cables
For starters, the first thing you need to do is find the audio and video input of your TV. This is typically located at the back of the monitor. Once you check this area, you will find the inputs, which are found in three colors - red, white, and yellow.
2. Plug In
Next, you'll need to plug the audio and visual cables into the correct inputs. The red cable goes in the right audio jack, while the white stereo cable goes in the left jack. As for the yellow, it fits in the video jack. This is the standard color pattern for cables; however, if you have a different system, it should be written in small letters on the cable.
3. Plug The Control Deck
Now that these plugs are fixed look for a grey rectangular plug in the stereo cable. This plug needs to be connected to the back of the control deck.
4. Insert Game
Now all you need to do is insert the game into the control deck. After that, plug the controller into the left-side port. During this process, make sure you are gentle in your work.
5. Connect AC Adaptor To The Console
Moving on to the next step, hook the AC adapter to the back portion of the console. And after that, locate the AC power socket and plug the other end into it.
6. Test It
If you have followed all the steps up till here, you are in good shape to continue. Pretty much all the things that needed to be plugged are plugged in at this point. The only thing that remains is to test and check whether all of them are working properly or not.
To check, turn on your HDTV and the Super Nintendo console. On the HDTV, you will see input select or other buttons like Line, Line-in, Source, or TV/Video.
7. Switch To Game
Next, you need to switch the TV from regular channel signals to the gaming system. There may be more than one input button, so check the backside of your TV to determine which is the correct one. Basically, the correct one is which changes your TV signal to display the game system.
8. Play
Lastly, the most essential step is to grab the console and your fellow retro gamer and play! So, if you have followed the previous steps properly, the game music will start playing. On the screen, you will see the display of the game with "start" or "play" written on it.
If you reach this stage, it means you have successfully connected the Super Nintendo to your modern TV. Now all that is left to do is play!

Even though my son and I managed to fix and play the game for hours, I faced a few challenges during the process. In this section, I'll highlight some of the issues that may arise when trying to connect the gaming system to your TV.
1. Unable To See Video
If you can hear the game music playing but cannot see the video game screen, it might be due to a few mistakes. If you forget to switch off the system before inserting the game, the screen goes blank. Secondly, it could be a power cable issue. When I faced this issue, I simply removed the cables and reinserted them, and it worked!
2. Unable To Hear Audio
Sound problems happen when the system is not set up correctly or if the cables are loose. Conduct a quick check of all the cables and units to make sure everything is plugged in well.
Another issue could be that you are using unlicensed units or elements which may not be compatible with the gaming system. Sometimes, the TV also has a small button that controls the sound, so be sure to switch that on for audio.
3. No Power
Often, power issues occur when the socket is not plugged correctly or if there is some malfunction in the socket. Another thing you should check is the AC adaptor because if that is not plugged the way it should be, you'll face power issues.
So, here is my short and easy guide on how to hook up the nostalgic Super Nintendo to your HDTV system. When I initially installed the game system, I faced a lot of confusion. But ultimately, I found the perfect method and wrote it down before I forgot about it.
