I’ve always enjoyed taking my dual axle trailer for all the weekend trips with my family or close friends.
But whenever it came to replacing the tires by jacking up the trailer, I was utterly confused. Naturally, someone else in the group had to do it every time, even when they were exhausted. That was, of course, embarrassing.
Hence, to avoid such situations in the future, I decided to learn the procedure on one such occasion. And My cousin Robert, one of my constant companions during the trips, offered to help me out. He is adept at such jobs since he travels a lot throughout the year.
So, he told me to watch carefully and explained all the deets wherever it was necessary. And I finally got the hang of the entire process. Not to brag, but I’m a pro at changing tires now! That’s why I’m here to clear your confusion.
Hi! I’m Stacy, and today I’ll be explaining to you how to jack up a dual axle travel trailer. Let’s get going!
The first thing to ensure is that you have all the equipment gathered for the job. Here are the essentials you’ll need for jacking up a travel trailer with dual axles.
- A good-quality lubricant
- A spare tire
- A tire ramp suitable for dual axle trailers
- A breaker bar
- A wrench and a socket
At this point, you might be wondering why I haven’t included bottle jacks or jack stands in the list. I thought the same way when Robert told me about the tools needed.
But I came to know from him that these might not always be effective on their own since the tires of a dual axle travel trailer are much heavier than other vehicles. The only way you can use these tools is in combination with some others, which you’ll know later in this article.
In comparison, a tire ramp is specially designed for dual axle trailers and hence, is strong enough to elevate the tires comfortably without any damage.

The procedure you need to follow will differ slightly based on the number of tires you have to change on one side of the trailer. Firstly, I’ll deal with the situation where only one tire has to be changed, so let’s proceed.
1. Changing One Tire Of The Trailer
Step 1: Parking The Trailer
In case you’re in the middle of a road, you must park the trailer properly to ensure that it doesn’t obstruct other vehicles or people. Apart from that, changing your tires becomes much easier while the trailer is on a clear patch. Keep in mind that the surface on which you’re parking the trailer should be sufficiently smooth, otherwise using a tire ramp won’t be fruitful.
Step 2: Locating The Flattened Tire
Following this, you’ll need to locate the tire that has flattened. This is essential for positioning it properly with the help of the tire ramp.
Step 3: Placing The Ramp
Next, retrieve the tire ramp and position it close to the tire adjacent to the flattened one. You must do this so that while the former is driven on the ramp, the tire you want to replace will be elevated automatically for you to change it.
Step 4: Driving The Tire Onto The Ramp
Now, get in your truck to drive the trailer forward till the adjacent wheel is positioned on the ramp. You should note here that it’s best to take the help of someone to signal you when the tire is up there. This will help you stop the trailer instantly. Thankfully, my husband always helped me with this step!
Step 5: Changing The Tire
After you’ve stopped the vehicle, turn it off and get down, then check that the tire is appropriately placed on the ramp.
Robert cautioned me that this checkup was crucial to ensure that all the effort doesn’t go in vain. And indeed, on one occasion, I noticed that the adjacent tire was not properly mounted on the ramp, and as a result, the flattened one wasn’t elevated. Hence, I had to drive the trailer a little further till the tire was perfectly positioned on the ramp.
Once this is done, the flattened tire gets elevated, enabling you to remove and change it comfortably.
Step 6: Driving The Trailer Off The Ramp
When you’re done changing the tire, get in the truck again and drive it off the ramp. Finally, remove the tire ramp from where you had positioned it.
2. Changing More Than One Tire
In case you require replacing more than one tire on one side of the trailer, you’ll have to elevate that side. To get the job done, you’ll have to use a jack stand along with a tire ramp.
You’ll, of course, have to begin by parking the trailer on a uniform surface so that the process goes smoothly. Then position the car ramp near the front wheels and turn the trailer on.
Follow this by driving the tire on the ramp and placing the jack stand near the rear wheels. Finally, use the jack stand to lift the rear part of the trailer.
