The soft chirping of birds ushers spring and alerts all the gardeners!
After all, birds can be pretty destructive. While some gardeners might welcome their presence, I'm certainly not one of them. Despite their beauty, they pose quite a threat to the crops and ruin years of hard work.
Take, for instance, last spring, when my veggie patch was ready for harvest and rows of lush berries hung on bushes. However, I woke up one fine morning to find half-eaten cabbage heads and uprooted hibiscus bulbs in the yard.
The birds became even more active during spring, trying to store ample food resources for their young ones. And before I knew it, my garden was full of nibbled berries and decimated flower buds. Now, I had to find a way to protect my garden but couldn't harm the birds in any way.
I turned to the internet for help and tried different methods, and I've compiled them in this guide. Hi there! I'm Stacy Smith. And today, I'll tell you all about how to keep birds out of the garden.
So, without further ado, let's get started!
1. Move Scarecrows Around
Contrary to what you'd like to believe, birds aren't stupid creatures. If you make a scarecrow and place it in one fixed spot in the yard, they'll quickly realize that it will not harm them and continue visiting your garden without any fear.
So, for the scarecrow tactic to be effective, frequently move the dummy around, or change its clothes. This way, the birds can be fooled into thinking that the scarecrow is a potential threat instead of a decoy.
2. Garden Netting
One of the most effective methods of deterring birds from damaging your vegetable garden is through installing netting.
I make use of butterfly netting that blocks the entry of birds while still allowing beneficial insects like grasshoppers, butterflies, and honeybees to make their way into the garden for pollination.
However, you have to be careful here since the net can trap and hurt birds if they're not kept taut. Apart from birds, hedgehogs, opossums, and lizards can also get trapped. So, do not make use of a mesh that has holes over 1 cm in size.
While you are opting for this method, choose UV-resistant, top-quality netting. Even though it might be slightly expensive, it will last for a long time. Besides, it will not shred or deteriorate over time and remain tight throughout, thus posing no danger to birds.
3. Place Decoy Predators
Much like scarecrows, decoy predators like owls, falcons, and snakes can deter birds and protect your garden. Even if they do not look natural, they can still scare away smaller birds like pigeons or sparrows.
However, it is crucial to keep moving them from place to place, or else birds will quickly realize that they pose no real threat to them.
If you can get hold of decoy predators that make a noise, that's even better since they can scare away birds and people alike!
4. Wind Chimes
Objects that make loud noise can successfully frighten birds away, and wind chimes are quite the noisemakers. For this method to be effective, hang the chimes in the center of your garden and not far away on the portico.
To further enhance its efficacy, choose chimes that have a reflective surface. The noise combined with the light easily scares the birds, and they'll stay away from your yard.
5. Pets
My dog has the time of his life shooing birds away from the yard. So, if you have pet dogs, let them run around in the garden and chase the birds. This will help keep them away, and over time, they’ll stop visiting your yard.
Cats can also deter birds, but I strongly recommend not letting them take over your yard since they end up littering and digging the soil, thus doing more harm than good.
6. Terror Eye Balloons
One of the most popular methods of scaring birds away is through terror eye balloons. As the name suggests, these are large inflatable balls, usually yellow in color and with a huge, scary-looking pair of eyes printed on them.
Hang this in the garden, and when it moves because of the breeze, it can startle the birds, who'll think it's a predator and stay away from the garden.

6. Reflective Items
Birds hate shiny, reflective surfaces and sudden movements. So, if you've got CDs or broken mirrors lying around, it's time to put them to good use.
Tie these CDs to your trees with the help of a string. As the wind moves them, the light will reflect in all directions and frighten the birds away.
7. Garden Spinners
If you have old streamers and spinners lying around in the basement, bring them out to scare off birds.
As I've mentioned before, any movement frightens them, so if the garden spinners or streamers move around due to wind action, birds get scared and stay away from the garden. Like with other items on this list, keep moving the spinners from one place to the next so that birds do not dismiss them as decoys.
8. Garden Fleece
To protect freshly planted saplings and low-lying bushes from birds, drape a layer of garden fleece over it and put rocks on the side to weigh it down.
Although this method is primarily used to protect lettuce, salad greens, and bok choy during harsh winter months, it can also provide adequate protection against birds.
