Holly is a hardy tree, growing back frequently if you don't kill it properly. So, you need to take necessary measures to protect the garden.
But why is it so important to kill a holly tree? Holly trees are more prone to infections, and once they get infected, they can ruin your entire garden.
I'm here to tell you how to kill a holly tree and prevent it from growing back. Let's dig in!
An infected holly tree can interfere with the growth of your plants and flowers. Meaning, you need to ensure that the infection doesn’t affect the garden by removing the tree altogether.
In this section, I've discussed some easy steps that you can follow to kill and get rid of a holly tree to save your beautiful garden.
Step 1: Cut Down The Tree
First and foremost, cut down the tree using an axe or a chainsaw. You can hire a professional to do so to avoid damaging the property as the tree falls down. The professional expert can also dispose of the tree, ensuring that you’re not left with a mess.
Step 2: Treat The Stump With Water And Fertiliser
Once you've taken down the tree, you're left behind with the tree stump. The tree can grow back from its stump, so you need to properly treat the stump with nitrogen fertiliser.
Drill a half inch hole into the stump and at every six inches along its perimeter. Now, fill each hole with nitrogen fertiliser and make sure to water the tree stump regularly.
Also, water the entire area surrounding the stump, along with the roots of the tree.
Step 3: Take Out The Tree Stump
After four to six weeks, you'll notice fungus growing on the tree stump. The fungus acts on the stump to soften it so that it can decompose.
Once the decomposition sets in, dig the entire stump out of the ground and sever the roots using a stump puller. Now that the tree stump and the root system have been removed, the holly tree can't grow back. However, it is best to ensure that not a single root is left behind.
After reading my article, I’m sure you’ve realised that killing and removing a holly tree demands some diligence. But, it is not impossible and if you stick to the steps I have mentioned above, you can kill a holly tree, making sure it doesn’t grow back.
However, I’ll suggest you hire a professional while cutting down the tree because handling a chainsaw or an axe can be a tricky business. You don’t want to have any serious accidents, so also be careful while using the nitrogen fertiliser on the tree stump.
With that, I’ll sign off. Take care, and I’ll see you next time!
