Without a properly leveled deck, your lawn maintenance routine could do more damage than good. Here's how you can level a Husqvarna lawn mower deck.
Husqvarna is one of the most reputed brand manufacturers based in Sweden. Its products are world-class and a pure joy to use because of their simple mechanisms. My husband gifted me a beautiful Husqvarna lawn mower for my birthday last year, and I've enjoyed using it for my regular lawn care and maintenance routine.
However, I recently noticed that something was slightly off about the deck height, causing the blades of my lawn grass to be trimmed at an angle. I knew right away that this needed my immediate attention.
Hi! I'm Stacy, and in today's guide, I will tell you how to level a Husqvarna lawn mower deck. Any lawn enthusiast will tell you how vital it is to have a properly leveled deck, without which even the best lawn care routines can go to waste.
So without further ado, let's get straight to the deets!
Step 1 - Reroute The Belt
The first thing you need to do is locate the routing diagram positioned somewhere at the front of your Husqvarna lawn mower. This diagram should tell you how to adjust the belt around the pulleys in a few simple steps. Once you have located the diagram, follow it carefully and reroute the belt before moving onto the next step.
Step 2 - Loosen The Screws
Next, take a screwdriver to loosen the screws around the plastic shrouds to enable easier access to the belts. I used a Torx T30 screwdriver for this step as it is the most efficient and reliable one for the job.
Keep in mind that you don't need to remove the screws entirely. Loosen them enough to have easier access to the belts underneath, so you don't have to go through the ordeal of finding the screws and placing them back in their correct positions.
Once you loosen the screws adequately, you should be able to lightly remove the plastic shroud covering the belts. Now, pull the belts down gently, sliding them down to reach behind the pulley.
Repeat the same steps on both sides of the deck.
Step 3 - Finish Routing The Belt
For the next step, you need to locate the metal tabs under the idler pulley. Once you locate them, move them out of the way for the moment so you can continue working on the belt. The belt should comfortably go around the pulley, creating a loose twist. Once you have done this, you can complete rerouting the belt and move on to the next step.
Step 4 - Reinstall The Spring
Now, find the spring that connects the mower deck with the idler arm. Reinstall the spring carefully. Doing this will provide some tension to the idler pulley.
Taking one end of the spring, hook it around the hole you find in the arm of the idler. Ensure that the hook of the spring is facing upwards and the rest of the body of the spring faces downwards. You may need to reorient the spring for this.
Adjusting the tension on the drive belt can take some time, so be patient with it.
Step 5 - Stretch And Connect The Spring
Next, carefully expand the spring so you can connect it to the opposite end of the bracket. It may initially look a little loose but will eventually straighten up once the belt is in place and there is adequate tension. At this stage, ensure that both ends of the bracket are facing forward.
Step 6 - Remove The Pin
If you are seated on the mower, take a look at the left side, where you will find a cotter pin. Remove this pin and bring the bracket up slightly as you move the deck forward. Once you remove the deck slightly, reinstall the cotter pin carefully. Remember to pull the safety out first.
This is when you need to carefully check the level and height of the mower deck. Once you are satisfied that everything is level, ensure that the deck is in its lowest position.
Step 7 - Adjust The Washer
Look for a small hole on the lever that is attached to the deck height control. Once you have located it, stretch the bent end of the rod and work it through the hole carefully. Next, gently pull the washer out of the way and lift the lid of the mower deck. Apply a little gel on the pin, and then bring the washer back to its original position.
Now, move to the right side of the mower and locate the safety pin. Remove it carefully and pull the bracket up in the same way you did for the other side.
Turn the rod so that the bent portion faces upwards to the right side of the mower. Then, place the bent end of the rod through the hole in front of the deck (it should be behind the wheel).
Step 8 - Check The Deck
Once you place the safety pin back into the rod, carefully mount the belt on the main engine pulley. Ensure that the belt is still routed the way it was in the previous steps, then loop the belt around the pulley. Check that the belt isn't twisted in any way, and replace everything to their original positions.
