How To Make A String Light Pole

If you’re looking for the perfect ambient lighting for your next outdoor party, then I’ve got it covered!

I was looking for an easy and affordable lighting setup that could add to my backyard setting when my son told me all about how to make a string light pole. So, if you, too, want to know about it, then read on.

7 Steps To Make A String Light Pole

Step 1: Decide On The Location

Before anything else, it’s important to figure out how much space you want to cover with the string light pole and the best location to install it.

For this, you can either draw a rough layout of the patio or backyard (where you plan to install the light) and mark the pole installation spot. Or, simply head out and place a marker on the required spot. Also, check if there are electric outlets nearby; otherwise, you will need extension cords.

Furthermore, decide if you want to attach the light strings to the exterior walls of the house or not.

Step 2: Gather The Materials

Making a string light pole from scratch will require the following things:

  • One 10 feet long electric metal tubing
  • 3/4th-inch flexible metal connector
  • 1 sturdy patio umbrella base
  • 1 threaded clamp and coupling
  • Hacksaw
  • Light strings and bulbs
  • Screwdriver
  • Ladder
  • Hooks (optional)

Step 3: Cut The Pole

From what I have seen, most electric metal tubings come in the standard size of 10 feet, which are suitable for large backyards or patios. However, if you have a smaller patio like mine, I’d suggest cutting it down to about 8 or 9 feet using a sharp hacksaw.

Step 4: Attach The Clamp

Once you have cut the pole into the desired length, it’s time to attach the coupling, followed by the clamp. Ensure that both are properly tightened at the end so that they don’t come loose once the light strings are installed. Insert the other end of the pole into the umbrella base to place it upright.

Step 5: Insert The Light Strings

Get atop the ladder, unscrew the opening of the metal squeeze connector to insert the string light between them, and screw them back when done. This accessory will help the string maintain its hold on the top of the pole. But you should ensure that the string doesn’t become too taut to prevent it from breaking.

At the same time, ask someone to hold the ladder firmly or use one that has a labeled feet structure. And see if you want to install some hooks on the exterior wall of your home closest to the string. Not only will these provide more support to the string and pole, but they will also help you create different shapes for a unique look.

Step 6: Attach The Bulb Sockets

As the penultimate step, attach the bulb sockets to the string. I’d strongly recommend going for light strings that come with the sockets and bulbs separately packed, as this reduces the chances of damage while unpacking them.

Another tip that I find useful is to first install all the sockets and then screw in the bulbs. If you attach the light bulbs immediately after installing the socket, it may cause the bulb to fall, as there’s bound to be some movement in the string when you attach the rest of the sockets.

Step 7- Screw In The Bulbs And Switch On The Power

Once the bulbs are in place, switch on the power supply and let the light be with you! I usually do this a couple of hours before the sun sets to check if all the bulbs are working properly. If not, bring in the ladder one more time to fix or replace the malfunctioning bulb or socket.

Conclusion

There you have it! A perfect string light pole put together from scratch.

You can always decorate the pole or opt for colorful bulbs and strings to jazz up the exterior setup. Or, use a PVC pipe if you don’t have a metal one handy. I have seen some of my neighbors paint the pole or even draw sketches on it to create a fun, artistic setup.

Furthermore, you can do away with the umbrella stand and insert the pole into the ground. But in that case, ensure to pack the base tightly with soil or dirt to keep it from coming out.

On that note, I will sign off now. Adios!
