How To Make Bonsai Trees Grow Faster

There isn’t a greater comfort than indulging in a daily routine of practicing the Japanese art of growing bonsai.

If you are as impatient as me, growing a bonsai to its final size can seem like a challenging task. And sometimes you wish you could do something to help the little tree along. Lucky for you, I know exactly what a bonsai needs in order to grow faster and thrive.

Check out my quick tips -

How To Make Bonsai Trees Grow Faster

1. Select Fast Growing Bonsai Trees

First of all, if you do not want to wait around for the tree to grow, make sure that you select a fast-growing species. Such species develop roots, a full trunk, and branches fairly quickly, saving you years of wait time.

Besides, there is no shortage of variety in the category of fast-growing bonsai. You will find evergreen, deciduous, coniferous, and succulents that take much less time to grow. Some other common varieties are maple trees, Japanese black pine, snowdrop trees, and jade plants.

2. Choose Younger Trees Instead Of Growing From Scratch

One of the easiest ways to get full-sized trees faster is by getting a small sapling to begin with. Earlier, I used to plant my bonsai right from the seed stage, and believe me, it took such a long time to grow that I ran out of patience. So, I started getting saplings with mature roots and more robust trunks because this takes the longest time to develop.

3. Aim To Thicken The Bonsai Trunk

The trunk needs to be thick and strong to support all the other elements of the structure. Also, a sturdy stem can transport more water and nutrients to the rest of the tree. While growing a thick trunk can take years, it increases the longevity of your bonsai.

Evidently, the fastest way to achieve a thicker trunk is to split it. To do this, you will need to separate the stem into two sections and place them at a distance with wires so that the middle portion heals properly.

4. Allow The Formation Of Many Thin Roots

Essentially, the roots will continue to grow and thicken with time, searching for water and nutrients. And, in turn, this will dry out the soil and slow down the overall growth of the tree. That’s why it is essential to trim the roots and keep them thin.

So, prune the roots regularly to create small, thin roots that are more efficient in absorbing water. However, remember to trim in the slow-growing season because removing the rootlets can shock the tree.

Final Words

So, that is all I have for you today. I hope you have grasped the basic idea of how to make bonsai trees grow faster. If you follow these simple steps, you are sure to get fully formed bonsai sooner than you expect.

Here’s me wishing you the very best with your bonsai. Until next time, happy gardening!
