A huge hole in a tree, especially at the base, might weaken it and cause it to topple over, posing safety risks to the people and structures around.
Next, you need to get rid of any loose materials inside the decay. Remember that you shouldn’t pull out anything by force as it could spread the cavity or cause serious injury to the tree; just remove whatever’s loose.
If you find water inside, drain it out with a hose or a tube instead of drilling holes to drain it.
After that, you need to fill the cavity. It is the most important step of repairing the hole in the tree trunk, so you need to be extra careful while doing it; otherwise, your tree might get damaged. I suggest you use a quality landscape foam as they bond quickly to non-porous surfaces and are ideal for filling tree holes.
You could also consider using insulation sprays, but I think foam-based fillers are a better option as they help you fill the tree cavity naturally. Also, some people prefer using wire mesh as they keep animals out of the tree.
Make sure not to use cement or other inflexible items such as bricks to patch the hole. That’s because such items will not move with the tree as it shifts and grows, which could eventually lead to an internal injury and cause damage to the tree.
Apart from that, I would strongly advise against using gravels, rocks, and sand as tree fillers as they tend to hold water in the tree hole, which can cause rotting.
