How To Put A Belt On A John Deere Lawn Mower

Riding a lawn mower across the yard is all fun and games until it screeches or stops abruptly!

That's precisely what happened last month when I was riding my John Deere lawn mower across the lawn. Now, I have been guilty of overworking this device, but it has never given up on me. So, I was pretty surprised to see it halt all of a sudden.

After careful inspection, I realized its belt had worn down and come off. I'm no expert in dealing with power equipment, so I roped in my husband for help, and with his help, installed a new belt.

One of the first components that depreciates in a mower is its belt. And even though the John Deere line of riding mowers is highly efficient, they're not immune to wear and tear.

Replacing a belt can be slightly challenging, especially if you haven't done it before. But, do not worry! I've compiled a step-by-step guide to simplify the replacement process for you.

Hi there! I'm Stacy! And today, I'll tell you all about how to put a belt on a John Deere lawn mower.

So, without further delay, let's begin!

Step By Step Guide

Step 1

The first step is to prepare the vehicle for installation. Do this by parking the mower on an even surface, like a garage or driveway. Turn the ignition switch off, remove the key and detach the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starts. Remember to wear work gloves to protect your hand from nicks and bruises.

Step 2

Bring the mower deck down to its lowest position. Before doing this, consider placing wooden blocks on either side of the deck to reduce pressure on linkage rods. Remove the spring pins and washers to disconnect the linkage from the deck. Then, remove the rear of the draft arm.

Step 3

The next step involves detaching the deck from the mower. For this, you have to first disconnect the drive belt from the engine pulley. Now, let the deck wheels rest on the ground by carefully removing the wooden blocks. Then, gently slide the deck from under the mower.

Step 4

You'll notice two belt shields holding the belt in place with the help of screws. Use a screwdriver to detach these shields.

Step 5

Once the belt keepers are removed, detach the sheaves. Then, loosen the bolts on the pulleys with a wrench to facilitate easy removal of the belt. Remember, you have to loosen the bolts and not remove them entirely.

But before you do this, here's a word of caution. Observe the way the drive belt goes around the pulleys. This will help when you are putting the new belt in place.

Step 6

The next step involves putting a new belt on the mower.

Carefully take the rubber belt over the pulleys and sheaves, following the pattern of the old one. Follow this up by tightening the bolts on the pulleys with the help of a wrench. Then, place the belt keepers back in place, followed by re-tightening of the sheaves.

As per the brand instructions, tighten the sheaves to 35-foot-pounds.

Step 7

Now that you have put the new belt in place, it's time to reattach the mower deck. Lift the mower, roll the deck under it, and then put wooden blocks on either side. Set the height lever of the deck to its lowest position.

Then, reattach the linkage and rear draft arm to the deck with the help of screws and washers. After this is done, you can remove the wooden blocks.

Step 8

Do a quick test run to see if you have installed the new belt correctly and the device works well. For this, reconnect the wires of the spark plug, put back the ignition key, and let the machine warm-up for a bit.

Once you start the mower, it should work flawlessly. In case you notice screeching sounds, turn off the device and inspect the newly installed belt. However, this issue is unlikely to crop up if you carefully follow the instructions and tighten the components.

Tips On Installing A New Belt

Here are a few tips that'll help you avoid common mistakes made while installing a belt.

Tip 1: Observe The Placement Of The Old Belt

Pulling the belt out of the engine is easy. However, installing a new belt is the real challenge. Often, people get confused and route the new belt incorrectly.

To avoid this mistake, take a picture of the old belt while it is still routed. This might not be possible if the belt is broken, and in such cases, you can always refer to the instruction manual of the mower that has helpful diagrams for routing.

Tip 2: Take Adequate Safety Precautions

Working with power equipment has its share of risks. Therefore, wearing protective gear such as hand gloves is essential to prevent cuts and scrapes.

While I am on the topic of safety, I'd also like to point out that before proceeding with the installation, always ensure that the mower is disconnected and the spark plug wires removed.

Tip 3: Clean The Mower

When you detach the mower deck, you'll notice the accumulation of dust and debris on it. Before re-installing, clean the deck and the other mower components to ensure smooth functioning. Over time, dust and debris can hinder the performance of the device. So, it's best to clean it well.

Conclusion

With that, I come to the end of this guide!

Installing a belt on a John Deere lawn mower isn’t an arduous task. All you need is a wrench, screwdriver, pliers, and two wooden blocks. However, it is essential to be patient and follow all the instructions carefully for a smooth installation process.

Now, it’s time for me to prune my shrubs, but here’s an essential tip before I go. Always purchase the belt directly from the manufacturer for premium-quality replacement. Your local hardware store might have a less expensive alternative, but they won’t offer the same assurance that the brand does.

That’s all for today. Until next time, take care!
