There’s no denying that removing bush stumps is a back-breaking task. However, removing them is necessary as they become old and unsightly.

How To Remove A Bush Stump With A Shovel

Albeit time-consuming, removing bush stumps using a shovel is one of the easiest ways of getting rid of them. On that note, I’ve discussed all the steps that you need to follow to go about it without breaking a sweat.

1. Get Your Tools

To begin with the procedure of removing bush stumps, it’s important to have all tools handy so you don’t have to make tons of trips to the hardware store. Besides a rounded shovel, an ax is enough to help you through the process. So, I suggest gathering the tools first before starting the uphill task of getting rid of bush stumps.

2. Start Digging

While the hard and dry ground is difficult to dig, you must water the soil before shoveling it. That’s because it is easy to dig a moist ground. Make sure you remove all the dirt gathered around the stump during the process and dump it in a tarp or a wheelbarrow.

After you’ve dug a few inches, the roots will be visible. When you see them, you will have to push the shovel into the roots and shatter them.

3. Cut Off The Roots

After shattering the roots, you will have to cut them off with a shovel. You can place the shovel under the shrub or bush stump and push it up to sever the roots. Also, I suggest you keep pushing the shovel to break the remaining roots.

4. Chop The Thicker Roots

Lastly, you will have to use an ax to chop the thick roots. The best way to do that is by striking them from the side. Also, make sure you don’t stop cutting until the shrub is completely removed from the ground.

However, you must also note that the primary taproots of most shrubs are thick, which means you will have to cut them using an ax.
