How to Repair a Pressure Washer Hose

A few days ago, my neighbor asked me, “how to repair a pressure washer hose?”. He was in tension as his pressure washer was not more than three months old. I have proposed an easy process to fix the pressure washing machine hose.

Many of the users face the same problem. I have seen them buy a new pressure washer instead of repairing the old hose. Of course, buying a new machine is satisfactory. But why will you spend a lot of money instead you can save time and money both?

Knowing the way of “how do you fix a leaky pressure washer hose” can be useful than buying one. But something more important is to understand the reasons hose problem and the benefits of repairing it.

Reasons for Hose Problem

The most dormant reason you may consider is the excessive pressure of water. You may have chosen the hose with no ability to bear a certain amount of pressure. Even you may run a high pressurized stream of water. These can be reasons to leak here and there on your hose of a pressure washer.

Sometimes you may discover leakage when the hose touches the gas washer exhaust. Normal wear and tear, kinking or tangling with pressure, etc. can be the reasons too. Even some kind of awkward situations can also cause leaking the hose.

Benefits of Repairing a Hose

  • If there is any leakage, it is undoubtedly possible to get low pressure of the stream of water. The water flows at good speed and volume from the washer. But it cannot remain the same at the end of the hose. Fixing a leaky hose eliminates this problem.
  • Sometimes you may get no pressure at all. The water may be going out trough lots of holes in the pressure washer hose. Repairing them can be fruitful.
  • Inconsistent water pressure can be the result of a faulty hose. The spiking and pulsing pressures are common in many household pressure washers. A damaged hose can be the culprit of these issues.
  • The pressure washer hose may have inappropriate fittings. Even it may be possible, you can not attach the fittings to the faulty hose. A kinky hose or holes on the hose will not be able to work well even if you apply almost the right fittings.

You may have tried to use tapes, wrapping papers, or glues to repair all the hose. But I think all these can be temporarily effective but not the permanent solution. As an example, you have tried to use duct tape or glue; it will go off when the water pressure is high consistently. It is because the adhesive can be diluted slowly.

Let us come to the points of how to repair pressure washer hose. I have told my neighbor to follow these steps:

Tools for Repairing a Hose for Pressure Washer

  • Gardening shears
  • Male and female repair coupling kit (coupling and hose clamp must)
  • Effective screwdriver
  • Plastic container or bucket
  • Dish soap
  • Water

Pressure Washer Hose Repair Step by Step

Step One – Safety First

As you are working with a machine, you must maintain your safety first. You may think it unnecessary, but it is crucial as other steps. As you are getting holes in the hose, turn the pressure washer off first. If it is an electric washer, unplug the device from the power outlet. It also helps to prevent damages or accidents while you repair a hose.

Step Two – Discharge the Water

An electric pressure washer may still static electricity. If you have just plugged the washer out, the leftover water inside the hose may react to that electricity. Inspect the hose without worry after unplugging it. Then start discharging any water from the machine and the hose. You can read the user’s manual for more support.

Step Three – Investigate the Hose

It is not like you take the tools and start repairing. You should know the location of the leakage on the hose. Inspection of hose may bring different things to you like the cuts, small or large holes, kinks or tangles, nicks etc. It would be best if you spent sufficient time in inspecting the pressure washer hose. It will give you a dependable result after the fix.

If you do not see any visible holes on the hose, there might help me the presence of a pinhole cut. It becomes harder to find for some specially designed water hose for pressure washer. Bring a plastic container or bucket and fill it with warm water. Then make a soapy solution with dish soap inside the bucket. Take the hose and immerse a minimal length inside the water. When it is submerged, move it down, taking the time. If you see any small bubbles, there are possible pinholes in the hose. Mark the spots from where the bubbles are coming, and the air is passing through.

Once you have marked the spot, determine the total length, such as if it is only a pinhole or a long puncture. Then, take the shears and cut a minimum 0.5” in both directions. Separate the affected length of the hose with leak. The cuts should be perpendicular to the washer hose. Repairing may be a failure if you cannot cut properly. Then, clean all the cuts till making it perfect. Re-check the hose again if there is still any problem persists.

Step Four – Place the Clamps

You may install the couplings on the hose. But it would help if you placed the clamp over the hose before installing—place clamps on each side of the possible affected cut. It will be impossible to install the couplings until you place the clamps.

Step Five – Installing the Male Coupling

Determine the cut side closest to the pressure washer. Then install the male repair coupling on that side. Some specific model of washer requires different couplings. You can read the manual for better understanding. The simplest way is to turn and push coupling into the hose for the installation of male coupling. After placing the male coupling correctly, tighten the hose clamp.

Step Six – Installing the Female Coupling

Follow the same process I told in step five. The difference is you need to install it on the side, which is closest to the water source. Follow the user manual, as I mentioned earlier.

Final Step – Finishing the Repair

Each step you have followed until now needs to be done carefully. I suggest you check and check everything again. Investigate all the connections among the hose, clamp, and coupling. Check them if they are seated in the right ways. It ensures safety as well as a successful repair of the pressure washer hose.

When you installed the couplings well, connect them for a flawless connection of the hose. It would help if you kept it flat. Also, there should be no kinks after you have repaired the hose. Now, you can make connection between hose and the pressure washer.

Thus, you can fix any damaged washer hose faster. So, you can see “how to fix a pressure washer hose.”
