Old linoleum can ruin the appearance of your bathroom décor. Any bathroom will look somewhat shabby and dingy when the linoleum fades or becomes loose.
That’s why you might need to replace linoleum from time to time to maintain the bathroom flooring. However, if you decide to replace the old linoleum flooring, you have to install a new bathroom flooring.
So, in this article, I’ll talk about how to replace linoleum in bathroom.
Step 1: Identify The Subsurface
The first step is to determine the original floor surface of the bathroom. You can choose a ragged corner of the linoleum and pull it using your fingers to expose a small portion of the subsurface underneath.
Only a small portion of the actual bathroom floor will be enough to identify the original subsurface type of your bathroom under all the linoleum. Common types of subsurfaces include concrete, vinyl, or hardwood flooring.
Step 2: Start Removing Old Linoleum
The next step is to remove the old linoleum by cutting small strips around 6 inches wide. Linoleum is not thick, so be careful not to scrape the subsurface while cutting the material. Once you’ve cut small strips, hold a corner of the linoleum and start peeling.
After peeling off all the strips, treat the remaining linoleum and adhesive with some boiling water. Cover the floor with wet towels and leave it like that for 10 minutes. Then, scrape off the remaining linoleum and adhesive using a floor stripper. You may need to repeat this process multiple times to remove all the adhesives.
Step 3: Prepare The Bathroom Subsurface
Once you’ve removed all the old linoleum, it’s time to smoothen out the bathroom subsurface. It might involve some polishing or refinishing. Smooth down the subsurface as much as possible before installing the new linoleum.
Step 4: Install New Linoleum
Finally, measure the entire floor area of your bathroom before installing the new linoleum. You can go for linoleum sheets or linoleum tiles. I think it’s better to install linoleum sheets because they last longer.
Cut the linoleum sheets to fit the floor layout before applying adhesive. Start with a small area and press the linoleum sheet firmly on the adhesive. Continue the process till the entire bathroom subsurface is covered with new linoleum.
Linoleum is the most sustainable and durable flooring option as far as bathrooms go. But, as it gets old, it cracks or turns yellow, ruining the entire look of your bathroom. So, you need to replace old linoleum and install new bathroom flooring.
The entire process can be quite tricky if you don’t know the type of bathroom subsurface. But, it’s easily doable if you follow the simple steps that I’ve mentioned above. Or, you can also hire a professional who can take care of all the work for you without hassle.
