Life is already difficult, and the last thing that you need is to have your little toe rub against the shoe while stepping out every morning.

I have broader feet, and there have been many instances where my little toe has gotten hurt because of new shoes. Now you need to know that different shoes have different widths, and the narrower ones can cause painful shoe bites if you have broad feet. 

This issue had me frantically looking for a solution when I went out with Angie one day. She saw my discomfort and asked me about my problem. I told her about it and that is when she told me all about how to stop shoes from rubbing my little toe.

1. Refrigerate The Shoes

I know that this sounds weird, but putting your shoes in the fridge can help you out a lot. So, first, take some plastic bags and fill them up with water. Once they are full, tie the end so that water does not spill. Then put them inside the shoes and place the shoes inside another plastic bowl. 

You can then place the entire thing in your freezer for the night. Since the shoes will be all frozen in the morning, make sure to thaw the ice in the morning. And once you take the plastic bags out of the shoes, they should loosen up a bit, preventing further toe bites. 

2. Working With A Hairdryer

If you do not want to try the cold treatment, you can also use heat for the purpose. Angie told me that a hairdryer could help with the area that makes the toe hurt. Just heat the area which pinches your toes, and that should keep the leather warm and prevent it from causing discomfort.

Then you can opt for thick socks, which would serve as a layer of protection between your feet and the inside of the shoes. However, this is a temporary process, and you will have to do it all over again every time you put on the shoes or at least till they loosen up. 

3. Stuffing

Stuffing boots would help them expand a little, and that would prevent any part of your foot from rubbing onto the interior of the shoes. Angie always stuffs her new boots with rolled up balls of newspapers and old fabric. She makes sure to push them well near the required area and leave them for a while.

For best results, she suggests keeping them inside for a few days. This should help in loosening the fabric or leather, which will prevent those annoying shoe bites from hurting your toes. 

4. Soaking

Water can do wonders, and you can try using it to loosen up the shoe. For this, you will first have to keep the boots in water so that the leather is completely drenched. The leather will absorb the water to become more soft and flexible. 

Then put on the drenched boots and go around the house for a while to help loosen the leather become more flexible. Again, this is a temporary fix, so you may need to repeat the process.

5. Taking Professional Help

If you feel that stretching out shoes is a time-consuming job and you are not willing to do it, then take the help of a professional cobbler. A professional will be able to do the job for you in a better way, creating more room in the shoe. However, you will have to pay for the service, and it might cost you some extra bucks. 

But the best part about it is that cobblers are trained to perform this task, so they won’t damage the shoes.

6. Purchasing A Shoe Stretcher

shoe stretcher is a wonderful gift for yourself, as it will prevent the shoes from rubbing the little toe as well as protect the top of your foot from getting hurt. 

Most shoe stretchers last for a long time, meaning you don’t have to buy a new one every time you buy a new pair of shoes. If you have got broad feet, investing in it would be beneficial in the long run.

Plus, you can get a shoe stretcher for a few bucks, which can work with most shoes. Leave them inside the shoe for a few hours to help stretch the leather. Once the leather is stretched well, there will be more room for your feet, thereby preventing toe bites.

Shoes that hurt the toes rarely stop at just that, as you will often see that the top of your foot has also turned red.  

Another obvious but important tip that I received from Angie is to check if a larger size of the shoes offer a better fit. After all, it’s not usual for people to wear the wrong-sized footwear, which could end up hurting your toes. The thumb rule, in this regard, is that there should be some room for the feet to relax at all times.
