How To Tell If Basement Is Plumbed For Bathroom

Any homeowner would agree that a bathroom in the basement adds value to a home.

So, if you have bought a home recently, you should check if the basement is plumbed for a bathroom. But how do you make sure that it is? Well, that’s what I will be telling you through this article, so make sure you read it till the end.

Now, without further ado, let’s get straight to the details.

How To Tell If Basement Is Plumbed For Bathroom

If you notice a few pipes sticking out of your basement floor, it is most probably plumbed for a bathroom. Ideally, there should be three large pipes — one for the sink, another for the toilet, and a last one for the shower/bath.

1. Sink

This pipe will either be black or white in color and is probably located on the far left or right side of the basement. There also should be a vent attached to the top, so check if it’s there or not.

2. Toilet

Apart from the sink drain, there should be a toilet drain. This should be slightly larger than the sink pipe.

3. Shower/Bath

Lastly, make sure there is a pipe for the shower —- here, you might have to break through the cement and add the trap. But first, I suggest taking the cap off and pouring some water there; if the water stays at the bottom, it is trapped. However, if it drains away, it is an elbow.

If you can identify these three pipes in your basement, it is plumbed for a bathroom.

Important Factors To Consider

Here, I’ve talked about a few important factors that you should consider while planning a basement bathroom plumbing layout.

1. Lighting

Basement bathrooms usually don’t have windows, so you have to focus on incorporating adequate artificial lighting to illuminate the space. And if your basement has a low ceiling, use recessed fixtures for overhead lighting. In addition to that, you can use wall-mounted sconces around the mirror.

However, having a higher ceiling gives you a range of lighting options, such as chandeliers or standard dome lights.

2. Building Permits And Codes

When building your basement bathroom, you must adhere to the building codes and acquire the necessary permits. If you don’t have the required permits, you could be imposed with a hefty fine.

Apart from that, there are certain codes that homeowners need to follow for new constructions. So, make sure you plan the bathroom layout very carefully.

Final Thoughts

That brings me to the end of my guide on how to tell if basement is plumbed for bathroom

So, if you notice the pipes sticking out of the basement floor, I don’t see any reason why you should not build a bathroom in the basement. Just make sure you follow the building codes and abide by the formalities.

That’s all for today!
