How To Test A Voltage Regulator On A Lawn Mower

Now I was very confused about how to test a voltage regulator on a lawn mower, which is when Angie stepped in. She told me all about the process and gave me some useful tips too.

How To Test A Voltage Regulator On A Lawn Mower?

I will begin with the tools needed for this process and then go on to the steps that need to be followed. If you follow them carefully, you should not be facing any kind of problems with the product’s battery. 

Tools Needed

The most important tool that is needed is a multimeter. If you do not already own one, get it from any hardware store or order one online. For those who already have it, check it beforehand to see if it is functioning properly. Along with this, you will need a pair of electrical insulation gloves, which will protect you from shocks. 

Steps To Test A Voltage Regulator

1. Place The Lawn Mower

First of all, you need to place the lawn mower on a flat surface. I will suggest placing it on a concrete or a tiled surface instead of grass. This will provide more stability while you work with it. Don’t forget to put on your gloves at this point to protect your palms. 

2. Spot The Battery

Once the lawn mower is in place, you need to find out where the battery is located. The voltage regulator will have to be connected to this; hence, this is an important step. I will suggest that you check the guidebook if you have any issues while finding or opening the compartment. 

3. Working With The Multimeter

After having connected the multimeter, you will need to switch to the voltage mode. This is usually marked with a “∆V” or a “V” symbol. If you face any problems here, check the user manual of the multimeter or check online

My friend Angie told me specifically that the voltage will never be measured in Ampere or ohm. So, please be cautious; if you shift to any of the two, the battery and the product can both get damaged at once.

4. Connect The Cables

Next, you will have to connect the right cables to the battery nodes. Now generally, a multimeter has a black and a red cable. There are 2 nodes on the battery with positive and negative signs. 

You will have to connect the black one with the positive node. And the red one needs to be connected with the negative node. Just make sure that you first open the cap of the battery and then proceed. 

5. Understand The Multimeter Readings

This is the most important part of the process, and you need to be very careful with it. Make note of the meter reading after having connected the cables. If it is above 12 volts, then your battery is working just fine, and you can safely keep using it. 

But if the meter reading is below 12 volts, then the performance is decreasing, and you will be able to use your battery only for a few more months. On the other hand, if you do not see any readings, then the battery has already died.

However, there could also be a possibility that the connection has not been made properly. Angie suggested that I should check the nodes and the cables before going over this process again. 

6. Switch On The Mower

Now it is time to turn the power on; once the mower is switched on, check the multimeter for readings. If it is working fine, then you will see a reading of around 13.8 volts. That would mean that the battery is functioning well. 

But a higher reading of 14.5 volts or more would mean that the regulator is faulty. And a lower value below 13.8 volts indicates that the battery might be weakening over time. It has to be charged immediately to ensure flawless performance. 

Remember that these readings need to be taken when the mower is not moving, so it has to be parked and switched off.

Tips

Angie gave me 2 tips that helped me a lot while working. She suggested electrical insulation hand gloves instead of the regular ones. These are safe to wear and will keep you protected from shocks. 

Also, while I ignore manuals generally, it is of utmost importance that you read them carefully before proceeding in this case. It is definitely essential to know how a multimeter functions, so study it well before working.

Final Words

Remember that the voltage regulator plays a significant role in ensuring that the charge moves from a starter to a battery. In case it does not function well or becomes weak, then the entire flow of charge is affected.

Hence, I will suggest that you keep checking it once in a while to ensure the smooth performance of the mower. It will also keep the battery safe and protected. In case it is weakening, you will know from before, and then you can take adequate precautions.
