How To Tighten Drive Belt On Craftsman Lawn Mower

An efficient lawn mower alleviates your gardening woes and helps attain a lush lawn!

Ever since my son gifted the Craftsman lawn mower to me a few years ago, my mowing duties have significantly reduced, and physical exertion has become a thing of the past. However, like any other gardening tool, the mower requires frequent maintenance to keep up its efficacy.

As a dedicated plant mom, I pay particular attention to the upkeep of all my gardening tools, especially the Craftsman mower. It is my favorite gardening companion, and the best way to get a neatly manicured yard.

One of the essential components of any mower is the drive belt. Without it, the machine simply cannot operate or will work sluggishly. Therefore, adequate maintenance and timely replacement of the belt are of the utmost importance.

Sometimes, with use, the belt might become loose. In such instances, you’ll have to bring out a wrench and a set of pliers from your shed to tighten the belt. But, do not worry! Tightening a belt is not as difficult as you might think.

Hi there! I’m Stacy. And today, I’ll tell you all about how to tighten drive belt on Craftsman lawn mower.

So, without further ado, let’s get started!

Step By Step Guide

Step 1

Working with a lawn mower is not easy, owing to its size, so you need sufficient space to work comfortably. As such, before moving on to anything else, park the mower on an even surface.

For example, a garage or driveway will be ideal. Once you’ve parked the mower, turn off the engine. For additional safety, you can also remove the key, pull out the spark plug, and disengage the blades using a socket wrench.

Step 2

The next step is removing the mower deck to gain access to the drive belt.

With the help of a plier, remove all cotter pins connecting the deck to the mower. This includes the pins from the clutch rod, the anti-sway bar, and the two suspension arms located at the center of the deck.

While you’re at it, you can quickly clean the dust and debris that has accumulated on the shaft and engine using a wire brush before moving on to the next step.

Step 3

Now that the deck has been removed and the area cleaned, locating the old belt will be pretty easy. Use a screwdriver to remove the spring connecting the belt keeper to the engine pulley. Once the belt keeper has been detached and released, a thick black band will be visible, known as the drive belt.

Step 4

Next, you come to the most crucial step! The visible belt will be V-shaped, spreading from the engine to the drive wheels.

To tighten this belt you’ll have to adjust the transmission pulleys and the engine to get the desired tension. To gain access to the transaxle pulley, locate and loosen the cap screw on it. Once this is done, you can shorten the belt length to tighten it up.

But before tightening it, carefully inspect it for signs of wear and tear. If the belt looks worn out or slack, consider replacing it altogether.

Follow the same steps I’ve listed here to replace the belt. However, instead of adjusting it, slide it off the engine and transmission pulleys.

Step 5

The next step is putting the mower back together. Start by reinstalling the belt keeper, followed by the blade and the deck. Simply reverse the order in which you separated the parts and make sure they are appropriately aligned while reinstalling.

Step 6

The final step in this process is to test the mower once you’ve put it back in place. To do this, connect the spark plug, refill the gas tank, and start the device as usual. Drive it around for a while to check whether it operates smoothly.

If everything works smoothly, it’s time to pat yourself on the back because you have successfully tightened the belt!

When To Tighten The Drive Belt?

It is not easy to spot a loose drive belt. You’ll have to open the mower every time you suspect the belt is loose or frayed. But, some signs will let you know when the belt needs tightening.

1. Squealing Noises

Squealing or screeching noises from the mower during operation are some of the most apparent signs of a loose belt. This noise is usually produced when the engine is started, and the machine comes to an abrupt halt.

2. Belt Comes Off

If the drive belt is loose, the chances are that it’ll shift out of place and not produce enough power to keep the mower running at a steady pace, thus hindering its performance. As a result, the machine is likely to stop between cutting sessions.

3. Poor Operation

Inconsistent operation of the mower can have several causes; a loose belt is one of them. If your mower stops suddenly or gets stuck mid-operation, it’s likely that its belt has come loose.

To fix this, you have to remove the deck and tighten the belt. Now, you might dismiss the importance of inspecting and securing the strap from time to time. But let me take this opportunity to warn you that a loose belt will ultimately damage the engine and reduce the lifespan of the product.

In addition, it will make maintaining your lawn difficult since the machine won’t work smoothly.

Conclusion

That’s all, folks!

Now that you know how to adjust the belt tension, your Craftsman mower will be able to function steadily without producing screeching noises or halting abruptly. Although tightening the belt is a simple process, it’s not enough sometimes.

With years of use, it might become worn out or damaged. In such instances, you need to replace the belt. The good news is that replacement belts are widely available at any local hardware store and are easy to install.

Now, it’s time for me to bid farewell, but I’ll be back with more such guides.

Until next time, take care!
