People often exclaim at the beauty of my garden, but hardly anyone recognizes the effort I invest in it daily.
I work hard to ensure that my garden can flourish, be it during summer, winter, or in the rain. It’s not easy, especially given my advanced years, meaning I can’t toil like before. But, thanks to the love and care of my husband, I’m always well looked after.
For instance, last summer, my husband bought an air-conditioner to help me deal with the scorching Texas heat. So, whenever I need to re-energize after gardening, I lie down in the bedroom, enjoying the cooler conditions.
All was well until the air-conditioner started malfunctioning due to a clog in the AC drain line. It was necessary to remove the debris quickly; there was, however, one problem - I had no idea how to clean an AC drain.
I searched the internet and found that people use shop vacs to clear their AC drain lines. Luckily, this worked like a charm, and my air-conditioner hasn’t encountered any issue ever since.

Contrary to popular opinion, unclogging an AC drain line isn’t difficult if you know what to do. My experience taught me that there are three primary steps, coupled with several sub-steps, towards ensuring that the drain line is clean.
I’ve highlighted the essential steps below, so without further ado, let’s get started.
You need to turn off the air-conditioner, but it’s not as straightforward as unplugging the cord.
When working with electrical appliances, you can never be too careful. So, it would be best to turn off the air-conditioner at the thermostat, preventing it from accidentally starting while you’re working.
Next, find the breaker panel, usually located in the basement or ground floor. Once you reach the panel, proceed to turn off the switch labeled AC for added protection. This ensures that you don’t damage the unit or the other power lines.
If there’s no marking, you’ll have to employ a trial-and-error method to find the right switch.
To find the AC drain line, you’ll need to know what it does. The pipe carries the water produced by the air conditioner outside (from the air handler). It usually drains into the ground, so try looking for a PVC pipe in the vicinity of the condenser.
In some cases, the drain line connects to the bathroom drainage system inside your home, making it hard to locate.
As the pipe opens outside, there might be debris blocking the exit. You can remove these objects with pliers or a glove, ensuring that the water has a smooth passage.
If nothing is blocking the exit, there’s bound to be stuff lodged inside the pipe. To suck out the debris, it’s essential to get the vacuum ready, for which you need to remove the filter. Irrespective of whether it’s a dry or wet model, removing the filter prevents mildew and mold growth.
Proceed to connect the vacuum with the opening of the drain line. Easy enough, right? Well, not exactly. You may need someone to help you because it’s critical to form a tight connection.
Place the vacuum opening in line with the drainpipe mouth or in a manner that slightly overlaps each other. Ask someone to hold the pipes firmly in this position while you seal the opening with a cloth or duct tape.
I used duct tape as it provides more reliability, but cloth will also work just as well. Once you’re satisfied that there’s no gap, turn on the vacuum.
You need to operate the vacuum at maximum power, so don’t hold back. Switch it to the high-power mode and let it run for 30 seconds. Then, stop and check the inside of the drain line.
To be doubly sure, you can operate the vacuum at 10-second intervals for up to a minute, which should clear out the pipe. So, detach the vacuum and look inside; if you’re still unsure, go inside and pour water into the access hole to see whether it flows out uninterrupted.
Turn on the air-conditioner by switching on the breaker panel. If there are no further issues, you’re all set to enjoy the comfortable indoor conditions.
It doesn’t take more than a minute to clear the clog, so if the problem persists, it would be wise to contact a professional service. You can also call the company that makes air conditioners, asking them to send their personnel for repairs and maintenance.
Apart from contacting professionals to clean and unclog the air conditioner, there's something else that you can do. A couple of weeks before using the air conditioner, pour some warm water down the condensate line to filter out debris in the drain line.
Also, I found that the most common cause for clogging is mold and algae. So, you can add a bit of white vinegar, depriving them of the favorable growing conditions.
That’s all there is to know about unclogging your AC drain line.
Hopefully, the only thing you’ll need to do now is adjust the temperature, with the cool air protecting you from the harshness of summer. Having said that, maintenance is essential before summer kicks in, so don’t forget to hire a professional service.
