How To Use Radiator Stop Leak

If you find pools of green fluid beneath your car, it's sure to be a radiator leak.

My neighbor Angie was greeted with green puddles the other day when we drove up to church together. She panicked and tried calling her husband to send over a mechanic, but I stopped her midway.

"Angie, let's use a quick fix for the time being," I said. She gave me a puzzled look, and I had to explain that there are products out there that prevent leaks temporarily. So, we used a bottle of Stop Leak, and as I predicted, the radiator stopped leaking. This simple solution gave Angie a few weeks before a radiator replacement was necessary.

After this incident, I realized that not everyone knows about this solution. Hi! I'm Stacy, and today's guide is all about preventing radiator leaks and how to use radiator stop leak.

Why Use Radiator Stop Leak

We mainly use radiator stop leak to prevent car breakdowns. There is a chance of losing fluid when a radiator leaks, slowing down the engine from cooling quickly. And, as you can guess, excessive buildup of heat can damage the engine. If you're not careful with managing this in time, it's possible for the car to break down without any warning.

I often use this measure to extend the life of my cars. Both our vehicles aren't exactly new, and the older ones tend to have more leaks. So, one of the maintenance measures we take is to use stop leaks to prevent any leakage and damage to the cars.

Some people also use it to delay the repairing or replacement of faulty radiators. While it may not fix the issue, it keeps the car in good condition for a while.

Types Of Radiator Stop Leaks

1. Liquid

Commonly, stop leaks are available in liquid solutions. Since they have lower viscosity, it allows them to glide through smoothly with the radiator fluid with minimum friction. Also, these sealants can be used as a preventive measure to reduce dirt and grime and prevent the formation of rust.

  • ONE STEP - POUR DIRECTLY INTO RADIATOR - EASY TO USE: Fiber additives lock together with liquid to increase strength and promote a permanent seal. It will not harm the coolingsystem when used properly, no draining is required.

2. Powder

There isn't much difference between all three types of sealants. They mainly differ in form and brand, but otherwise, the function is identical. The only drawback about these powder sealants is figuring the amount of powder to mix with water or add to the radiator.

3. Tablets

You won't often find regular vehicle owners opting for this type of sealant. I haven't used this myself, but I have a general idea about how they work. You simply need to drop the tablets in the radiator and keep the vehicle aside.

But, I have heard of another way in which you can dissolve the tablets in water first and then pour the mixture into the radiator. After the solution is in the radiator, it acts exactly as a liquid stop leak would.

How To Use Radiator Stop Leak

Products for car issues are readily available in mechanic shops, automotive companies, or hardware stores. You can easily buy Stop Leak from any of these places mentioned. Now, I'll explain how to use radiator stop leaks in 4 simple steps.

Step 1 - Pour Stop Leak

The first thing is to pour the product into the radiator. Usually, most vehicles require one full liquid bottle at a time. In any case, the recommended amount is often mentioned at the instruction panel of the product. So, pour the product after removing the screw of the radiator and make sure the coolant does not spill.

Step 2 - Pour Radiator Fluid

Once you have emptied the entire bottle of stop leak, it's time to add the radiator fluid. The level of coolant should be around the same as recommended by makers.

Step 3 - Start The Vehicle

After this, it is best to start the engine once to allow a few minutes of warm-up and see the performance. Giving the product some time to settle while the engine is on will ensure that stop leak penetrates throughout the radiator.

Step 4 - Fill With Water and Coolant

Now, you will need to create a mixture of water and coolant, both in equal quantities. Fill this mixture into the radiator to finish the process.

After this is done, allow the vehicle to rest for 12 - 14 hours to allow the product to do its work. Don't be tempted to drive your car around.

Whenever I add a radiator stop leak to my car, I always keep my car keys at a different place than usual. I do this to prevent anyone in the house from accidentally driving it around. It may seem silly, but it works for me!

What To Do When Stop Leak Isn't Working

Stop Leak is a valuable option that seals the areas that need repair in the cooling system. But, there are some situations where sealant cannot save the radiator, and you'll have to look for other solutions. Some examples of leaks that cannot be sealed using Stop Leak are - hose leaks, coolant reservoir tanks, water pumps, or end tank radiator leaks.

Alternatively, if you pour too much of the sealant, the reservoir can get blocked completely. To prevent this, read the directions on the product carefully since each manufacturer has different filler material of varying strength.

Furthermore, it's important to remember that using sealants is a short-term solution and if the radiator is broken, it will need to be replaced.

Final Words

So, now you know why radiator stop leaks are required and how to use them. It might be challenging to figure out if your vehicle needs one, but there are signs similar to the one I saw with Angie’s car.

After I recommended it to Angie, we used one bottle of Stop Leak for her car the same day. Along with getting rid of the leaking green puddles, we also found that the heating of the engine had significantly reduced as well. Similarly, I hope this guide benefits you and all your queries related to radiator stop leaks are answered.

See you next time with another helpful guide, bye!
