How Wide Is a Standard Closet

The perfect closet can make your life easier by providing the much-needed storage space.

However, in most cases, people don't talk with their builders about their requirements. Consequently, they end up with shallow closets that don't have enough room for their stuff.

Worry not, as I'm here to provide the answer to the question, "how wide is a standard closet?" So, without further ado, let's get started!

Type Of Closets

As you may already know, there can be different types of closets in a home, but here I will focus on the usual closets seen in most houses. The two common ones are the reach-in closet and the walk-in closet, so let's check out their standard width.

1. Reach-In Closet

By far, these are the most common storage spaces you will see in homes and apartments. Reach-in closets are usually a part of bedrooms and tend to take up a whole wall. The minimum width for a reach-in closet should be 36 inches, but it's sometimes more based on personal preference.

If you live in a colder climate and have the need to store bulky clothing, the depth may reach up to 28 inches with the width close to 40 inches. Another crucial thing about reach-in closets is the return walls present on the sides, extending to the door of your closet. Typically, these walls are around 12 inches wide or less, ensuring that the insides of the closet are more accessible.

2. Walk-In Closet

Compared to the earlier variant, the walk-in closets are big enough for you to go inside them. At the minimum, a walk-in closet should be four feet wide by four feet deep with a distance of at least 24 inches between the shelves. Thus, it will have storage shelves on the back wall and another sidewall with these dimensions.

A closet with a width of six feet can have shelves on all three sides, excluding the door. But people who want a more spacious walk-in closet with a seating arrangement may want to build one, having a width of at least ten feet.

Final Words

That's everything I had to tell you about the width of standard closets. As you may understand, it can vary based on the space available in a room or on the requirements of a person.

I prefer wider closets as they are better for storing more things. But if you're unsure about choosing a suitably sized closet, have a chat with your builder, as they would be able to provide you with personalized solutions. They can even help you build closets that can hold a lot of stuff while managing the available space in a room better.

It’s time for you to get to work and I am sure that you'll be able to build compatible closets for your home by referring to our guide.
