What Does A Yard Of Mulch Weigh?

Mulch is an excellent landscaping and gardening tool for preventing weeds, insects, and pest infestations, besides promoting better plant growth.

However, knowing about the weight of a specific quantity of mulch is crucial for using it effectively because too much mulch can suffocate the plants. So, in this guide, I will help you learn about the weight of different types of mulches.

Types Of Mulch

Mulch can be composed of a wide variety of materials, resulting in many different types of mulches available. However, I can broadly classify them into organic and inorganic mulches:

1. Organic Mulches

Organic mulches are composed of hardwood and softwood chips, bark, leaves, compost mixes, and other plant byproducts. These materials decompose over time and help in improving soil fertility, structure, drainage, and more. Since they decompose into the soil, organic mulches need to be replenished periodically.

2. Inorganic Mulches

Inorganic mulches are composed of materials that do not decompose. These generally include lava rock, stone rock, pulverized rubber, and other similar substances.

Such mulches are mostly used for decorative purposes but can also help warm the soil for planting by absorbing and reflecting heat.

Moisture Content

Just like compost and soil, the weight of the mulch depends upon how much moisture it contains. Even though the same amount of mulch and compost may look similar, both will have different weights due to varying amounts of moisture.

Understanding What Is A Yard Of Mulch

When speaking about a yard of mulch, people generally refer to a cubic yard, and one cubic yard means 27 cubic feet of mulch. You can obtain this value by multiplying the length, breadth, and height of one cubic yard, with each side measuring three cubic feet.

How Much Does A Yard Of Mulch Weigh

A. Organic Mulch Weights

First, let’s look at the weight of some of the commonly used organic mulches. The weight can vary depending upon the type of mulch and its constituent materials, but on average, most organic mulches weigh about 400-800 pounds per cubic yard.

For instance, mulch made of bark chips can weigh between 600 and 1,000 pounds, while compost mulch weighs between 1,000 and 1,600 pounds. Similarly, wood mulch weighs about 270 pounds per cubic yard, while straw mulch weighs 540 pounds.

B. Inorganic Mulch Weights

Inorganic mulches generally weigh more than organic ones. For example, shredded rubber mulch weighs about 1,188 pounds per cubic yard, while river rocks mulches can weigh as much as 2,700 pounds per cubic yard.

Egg Rock is also one of the heaviest mulches, with one cubic yard weighing about 2,430 pounds. Additionally, marble rocks weigh as much as egg rocks, while lava rocks weigh 972 pounds per cubic yard,

Final Words

Knowing what does a yard of mulch weigh can help you while undertaking any landscaping or gardening project.

Just keep in mind that different types of mulches have varying weights, and the weight is also affected by the amount of moisture content present. That’s all for now, see you next time.
