Flowers can definitely add a unique dimension to your vegetable garden.

When I first started keeping vegetables in my garden, I encountered various challenges that hindered my gardening hobby. But I was determined to grow my vegetables, and that is when I realized that flowers could be beneficial companions to them.

So, keep reading if you want to learn more about what flowers to plant in a vegetable garden

What Flowers To Plant In Vegetable Garden

Over the last few decades, garden hobbyists and scientists have seen tremendous development in vegetable growth whenever flowers are introduced to the garden. Flowers are an excellent companion for your vegetable garden since some are beneficial pollinators while others can be useful in controlling pests

Apart from this, flowers can also add to the aesthetics of the vegetable garden as it lends a more vibrant and fresh look to your garden. Not to forget, some flowers can be used as complementary edible ingredients.

Keeping this in mind, I have listed a few flowers that will be beneficial for your vegetable garden:

1. Marigolds

Coming first on the list is a flower known for its vibrant golden color. These flowers are great for pest control. Moreover, rabbits tend to stay far away from a vegetable garden fenced by marigold flowers. Besides this, they can also be used for confusing Mexican bean beetles.

Based on my experience, marigolds have also received recognition for repelling insects like whiteflies, thrips, squash bugs, and tomato hornworms. It can also release a chemical in the soil, which is beneficial in killing root nematodes.

2. Lavender

Lavenders have always been the number one pick in the garden hobby as they are highly demanded for their beautiful bloom and sweet fragrance. However, these herbal flowers can also be used for repelling several pests and rodents away from the garden.

According to some experts, lavender fragrance can often be unpleasant to various rodents and mammals. Deer prefer to stay away from gardens that have lavender growing in them, and so do mice. On a similar note, lavender can reduce the number of ticks in your area and make it a friendly environment for your pets.

3. Borage

Borage is a flower known for being edible and having a subtle cucumber flavor. Most professional chefs prefer to grow this flower along with other vegetables as it makes a great ingredient for salads and other refreshing dishes. Apart from this, the flower can also be used for attracting bees which are excellent pollinators.

However, you should regularly maintain these flowers as they have a tendency of growing wild and messy. Nevertheless, they are a great companion as they can help most of your vegetables grow and flourish more abundantly.

4. Cosmos

Cosmos is one of the easiest flowers to keep in your vegetable garden. It requires the least amount of maintenance, and it can bloom quickly. These plants are commonly used for attracting helpful insects to your vegetable garden.

For instance, green lacewings can help bring down the population of thrips, aphids, and scale if you have a problem with their infestation. White and orange cosmos have a higher chance of attracting green lacewings that are voracious pest eaters. So, you could worry less and grow your vegetables in the garden peacefully.

5. Sunflowers

Unlike the previous flowers, sunflowers have a wide range of uses and applications in a vegetable garden. First and foremost, sunflowers can be used for making cooking oil. Similarly, the seeds can be used as an edible ingredient for several dishes.

On the other hand, the nectar from the sunflower can attract pollinators to your vegetable garden. However, you should be on a watch for squirrels since they are attracted to the sunflower seeds. Growing a coarse-leave plant below the sunflowers can help to keep small animals and pests at bay.

Conclusion

On that note, I have reached the end of my informative blog, and I hope you were able to learn from it and make a wise decision for your garden.

Before leaving, here are a few points to consider while growing flowers in your garden. Firstly, you should always pick flowers that don’t cross-pollinate with your vegetables. Lastly, make sure that the flowers don’t have any natural pests as they could cause an unwanted infestation in your garden.
