No gardening enthusiast wants their plants to die. But uncontrollable mint growth can be dangerous for other plants in the garden and must be eliminated.
And I am here today to tell you about the different methods you can use to get rid of mint plants. Be patient through the process, and I am sure you will have a well-maintained garden soon.
Read on for my tips and tricks!
What To Use To Kill Mint
1. Digging
This is the most common way of getting rid of mint plants. However, you must be very careful while digging, or you may miss a root, which can grow into a large plant soon. Also, remember that digging works best for small areas infested by the mint.
First off, you need to dig a few inches around the plants and take out all the tangled roots. These roots are easily recognizable as they have a minty smell. Once the visible roots are removed, move the soil around in that area to spot any remaining roots.
2. Boiling Water
Using boiling water is another common technique to kill plants. However, only pour boiling water over mint growth if you do not have other plants around that may be harmed.
3. Soap And Vinegar
While there are chemicals available on the market, I will not recommend using them until necessary. Instead, you can use a mixture of soap, vinegar, and salt to do the job. Here, you will need to mix two cups of salt with one gallon of vinegar and a teaspoon of soap. Remember that you need to apply the solution very carefully so that you only kill the mint plants and not the surrounding vegetation.
Also, you may not see results immediately. The application needs to be repeated a few times over a week for it to show results.
4. Smothering
In case the mint plants still do not die, you can try smothering them. For this, you will need newspapers and mulch.
Once you have gathered the materials, use a few newspapers to create a thick layer and place it on top of the mint plants. Cover them well and add mulch on top. Keep it this way, and the plants will eventually die.
Final Words
If all fails, consider purchasing a herbicide as a last resort. Rest assured, a good quality herbicide should be able to kill the mint easily. But remember to read the label for instructions and follow them correctly.
However, note that chemicals are the last thing that you would want to use in your garden. It can destroy soil health and prevent other plants from growing.
With that, I have reached the end of this guide, and it’s time for me to wrap up. I hope you are aware of what to use to kill mint by now.
Take care and keep your garden safe!
