Usually, gardeners love to grow gardenias for their lovely appearance. However, I enjoy growing them for the exquisite scent its flowers produce, which spread all across my yard.

There are plenty of gardenia varieties, and pruning according to type might be vital if you want the best blooms in the flowering season. Most gardenias will bloom only once annually, but some varieties can have multiple blooms in one year.
Find out the blooming schedule of your gardenia variety, and it will become easier to prune at the right time. Basically, you will need to check if the shrub has completed a blooming cycle, and only then will it be alright to prune.
The best time to prune gardenia shrubs is after the flowers have finished blooming. At this time, the flowers will have already bloomed, and the plant will be preparing for new seasonal growth. The exact season depends on the gardenia variety, but spring is the most common time when the blooms occur.
Pruning during autumn and colder weather is not recommended because this will delay or destroy the flower blooms for the next year.
Alternatively, one can also prune gardenias in early spring before the growing season. This is because the flower buds do not start to appear until the summer season. However, you will not get a full bloom if you prune right before the buds start growing. Trimming the buds at this time will remove the flowers that would have formed the next season.
Pruning gardenias helps maintain a better shape and structure for the shrub and also removes unwanted bits like dead branches. While pruning a gardenia bush, you'll have to carefully check for the parts that need immediate removal and get started on those first.
Typically, I start with the overgrown portions and ones that seem to be growing in strange directions. Then, there are also those branches that intertwine with each other and look messy. Also, the branches with no leaves and shoots might not add to the appearance of the shrub, so do away with those sections too.
It is better to prune in small amounts and carefully remove parts that do not need to be there. Use a tool that you are familiar with, and the work will get much easier. While trimming, if you come across branches that have many leaves and offshoots, leave them untouched.
If you have to prune the better branches, remove only the tip so that it grows well until the next season arrives.
Sometimes, you may need to cut whole parts of the shrub since neglecting it may reveal a bunch of other problems. One time I had to prune an entire section of an overgrown gardenia because it spilled over and blocked the entryway to the front door.
It was getting tedious to walk around the excess growth to get to the door; thus, I pruned the branches that grew horizontally. It would help if you did this too so that the shrub grows only upwards and does not stray across the yard.
Note that intensive pruning will involve huge cuts and reduction in the volume and, in some cases, height. Don't hesitate to remove the leaning branches that look like they are about to fall. However, keep a mental image in mind and allow the image to guide you when making such big changes.
You do not want the shrub to appear lopsided after taking out one unwanted portion. As a general rule, avoid cutting more than 1/3rds of the plant because overcutting will prevent the plant from growing.
The good thing about gardenias is that the flowers grow on the older branches as well as the new growths of the season. This means that even if you prune the shrub at an odd time of the year, they will produce a few blooms. However, the number of flowers will be significantly lower, and you won't be able to enjoy gardenias in their full glory.
