Will Bright Lights Keep Bats Away

Did you just hear from a friend that bright lights are the best solution to keep bats away from your home?

Hang on — the issue isn’t so straightforward after all. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to answer the question, “will bright lights keep bats away?”. You’ll need to consider a few essential aspects to be sure about the effectiveness of this solution. Read on to know more.

Can Bright Lights Deter Bats?

Since bats stay up at night, it can be understood that they don’t like lights. But then, after you put up a bright light, it might prevent them from flying about the home, but they might easily sneak back into a darker area of your home, such as the attic. And eventually, they might move deeper into the home too.

Another point worth noting here is that lights attract bugs, which are food for bats during nighttime. That’s why they might brave the light for the moment to catch their meal.

So, if you indeed want to implement a system that can deter bats, bright lights won’t be effective in most cases.

Other Issues With Bright Lights

Other than not being much effective in deterring bats, there are a few other issues associated with setting up bright lights:

1. They Attract Other Animals

Bright lights can actually cause other light-loving animals to sneak in to find some food. For instance, raccoons enjoy the extra light around them while digging through the trash in your home for their midnight snack.

2. It Is Cost-Intensive

Though it might not seem so initially, having bright lights switched on throughout the night is gradually going to cost you more money. In fact, your power bills might increase to such a point where keeping them on for longer won’t be feasible.

3. May Be Problematic For Neighbors

Based on the area you live in, your neighbors might find bright lights to be problematic. In case the lights shine through their windows during nighttime, you may end up getting complaints.

Some Simple Solutions

If you often find bats at home, you’ll need to drive them away immediately. Here are some simple tips that may be helpful:

1. Spraying Naphthalene Solution

Naphthalene has a strong smell that can repel bats. As such, preparing a naphthalene solution and spraying it around the areas where bats mostly sit can be an effective home remedy.

2. Aerosol Sprays

Aerosol sprays can help keep bats away. In fact, the strong smell won’t let them enter the house. All you need to do is spray it in the places where bats are primarily visible.

3. Using Small Mirrors

Bats actually get scared when they see their shadow or reflection. That’s why placing small mirrors near the places where they mostly sit can help drive them away.

Final Words

As you can see, there are quite a few truly effective solutions to keep these flying mammals at bay. So, you can opt for any of those instead of having bright lights that are costly and can pose several problems. But if you feel the issue has turned too difficult to tackle, it’s best to contact a professional wildlife removal service.
