What Is Water Softener Salt?
Hard water is rich in minerals like magnesium, which is highly unsuitable for cooking and drinking. In comparison, soft water is much safer to use in different household applications. So, you can use water softener salt that might help you treat the hard water and soften it.
Water softener salt is an essential component in any water softener system and helps to remove the hardness of the water by stimulating ion exchange. The sodium chloride ions present in the water softener salt help in flushing out the hard minerals from the unfiltered water during the process of ion exchange.
As a result, high purity salts like sodium chloride and potassium chloride pellets are usually used in manufacturing water softener salt. But, sodium chloride is more commonly used than potassium chloride as it is more potent in removing the harsh chemicals and softening the water.
Can You Use Water Softener Salt On Trees?
As I’ve mentioned before, soft water is much healthier and safer to use for drinking and cooking purposes compared to hard water. However, before you can use it on your trees, it’s better to ask the question, will water softener salt kill trees?
Even though soft water is more suitable for household applications, it is not a good idea to use it for planting trees as it contains high amounts of sodium. When you treat the unfiltered hard water with a water softening salt, it facilitates ion exchange and replaces the mineral ions with sodium chloride ions. Thus, the sodium content of the water increases automatically.
But, most plants and trees cannot tolerate or thrive in high amounts of salts. In fact, the sodium ions present in the softened water affect the water balance of the trees by making them physiologically dry.
Hence, water softener salt can essentially kill the plants and trees in your garden due to excessive thirst; that’s why it’s completely unsuitable for use on plants.
