1. TRIAX DSG / DCT ATF

TRIAX DSG / DCT ATF

One of my top recommendations is a synthetic oil developed by TRIAX Lubricants LLC, a company trusted by millions of customers across the country. This one is compatible with most latest engines and is specially formulated to enhance the transmission performance of an engine.

Product Highlights

The TRIAX DSG / DCT ATF has an amazingly high lifespan compared to most of its competitors, with a coverage of 300,000 miles or more. It’s formulated to provide exceptional gear grip to your car and minimizes the grinding problem. And its impressive shifting quality and zero slippage help improve your driving experience.

Another reason to select this product is its ability to protect your vehicle from any potential damage under extremely high or low temperatures. Its unmatched ability to deliver exceptional performance under any conditions is what I loved about this.

Then, there is the fact that Triax synthetic oil minimizes deposit formation in the engine, which reduces the overall sound levels. And its formulations match all Dual-clutch OEM requirements, making it suitable for any luxury or sports car.

What's There To Like About It?

The first thing that I liked about this synthetic oil is how well it lubricates the engine and minimizes friction between its critical parts. My husband uses this oil in his Audi A4, and it's been almost three years since he has changed it. And I can’t remember him spending on costly repairs.

Moreover, when my husband and I visited the Sonoran Desert in his car last year, to my surprise, the oil performed exceptionally well in the high temperatures.

What's There Not To Like About It?

While I haven’t encountered many issues with this engine oil, I noticed that it burns fuel faster and might cost you some extra bucks, considering the increasing fuel cost these days. However, it occurs primarily when driving in hot weather and is almost insignificant in normal conditions.

Buyers Guide

With this, my reviews of the best DSG transmission fluid come to an end. However, choosing an ideal product might still be difficult with so many factors at play. Hence, I'll now go over each of the important factors so that you can make a well-informed purchase decision.

1. Compatibility

It is probably the most critical factor to consider when selecting a transmission fluid. No matter how expensive the fluid is, you should always check if it’s compatible with your vehicle type.

This information is generally available on the brand website or e-commerce website. Remember that if you fail to choose the right transmission fluid, it can lead to complete transmission failure in your vehicle and might even damage it completely.

2. Type Of Transmission Fluid

Conventional and synthetic fluids are the two types of transmission fluids on the market. The former deliver a more or less satisfactory performance, and they are more affordable.

However, they don't protect your vehicle from deposit formation, grinding, rust, or other problems, which is not the case with synthetic fluids. And these oils break down at extreme temperatures, leading to degradation in vehicle performance.

On the contrary, synthetic fluids are formulated to provide stability and strength. Due to the unique formula, they can withstand extreme conditions and lead to longer drain intervals, fewer breakdowns, and improved performance. The only thing that might concern you is the high pricing, but as they say, you can’t put a price on quality!

If you ask me, I’d say it’s better to opt for the latter if you want the engine to remain in top condition even after years of driving.

3. Oil Viscosity

The primary purpose of transmission fluid is to minimize friction and wear between critical parts of an engine. As the fluid lubricates and surrounds the engine parts, it reduces the friction between them, thereby lowering the risk of breakdown. And it dissipates the heat generated during engine operation while helping with temperature control.

As a result, the viscosity of your transmission fluid must be considered. To put it simply, the viscosity is defined as fluid thickness and is measured in terms of SAE. The higher the SAE value, the higher the viscosity of the oil, and vice versa. In general, fluids with higher viscosity levels protect the engine better.

4. Budget

Budget is another thing you might want to consider when purchasing a transmission fluid for your vehicle. Before finalizing one, you must analyze its price and compare it with other products on the market. The comparison must be based on features they present at a particular price point. This saves you from spending unnecessarily and narrows down your choice to help select the right product.

5. Additional Features

Additional features offered by the transmission fluid might be a breaking point that should help you select the ideal one. Some fluids, like the Castrol Transmax transmission oil, come with features like high thermal protection, high friction resistance, and increased lifetime. So, if you prefer such features, then it’s viable to go for it.

Moreover, if your vehicle has been suffering from a specific problem that needs to be dealt with, choosing a product specially designed to combat it will undoubtedly enhance its performance. For example, the Triton 5.4 engine may often suffer from overheating, which is why it’s crucial to go for a fluid that keeps the engine cool and lubricated.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. What happens if I put more transmission fluid in my vehicle?

Adding more transmission fluid than the standard level in a vehicle causes leaks and can be potentially dangerous.

Q2. What happens if I use the wrong transmission fluid?

Using the wrong transmission fluid can make shifting gears a real hassle. You may have to use much more force while shifting them and they may also make strange noises during the process.

Apart from that, it can lead to potential overheating and even damage the gearbox. So, you must be careful when selecting a transmission fluid for your vehicle.

Q3. How often should I change the transmission fluid?

As per the manufacturer’s instructions, transmission fluid needs to be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. And if you’re driving your vehicle every day across the city and change gears repeatedly, I’d recommend changing the fluid more frequently.

Otherwise, you’ll notice that many of the engine parts are not working properly, and there may also be significant damages caused to the gearbox.

Q4. What happens if I mix oil with my transmission fluid?

Gear oil is very similar to engine oil but without proper cleaning agents and friction modifiers. So, I’ll recommend against mixing the transmission fluid with any engine oil.

Q5. How should I change the DSG transmission fluid?

Firstly, find the DSG filter cartridge by removing the battery, airbox, and battery tray, for which you will need a DSG transmission fluid change kit. Once you’ve removed these parts, you have access to the housing, and removing it will provide access to the DSG filter cartridge. Go ahead and remove that as well. It aids in cascading the oil fluid and easily accepts new fluid.

Behind the engine, you’ll find a DSG drain plug where you unscrew two funnel plugs and completely drain the old fuel. Once it’s done, place a funnel on it to pour the new transmission fluid.

Shake the bottles carefully before you take off the cap and pour it. Now, pour it into the funnel and once you’re done with that, reinsert the housing and filter. Finally, reassemble the battery and airbox.

Q6. Can I use ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) for DSG?

No, you can’t use ATF for direct shift gearbox transmissions. Although some ATFs might work with DSGs, most don’t, so I wouldn’t recommend doing that.

My Final Recommendation

That has brought me to the end of my guide on the best DSG transmission fluid, and hopefully, it will eventually help you find the most suitable option.

That said, I’d like to share some of my personal favorites from the list before wrapping up. My top choice would be the TRIAX DSG / DCT ATF fluid, which delivers exceptional wear protection and driving experience and enhances the lifespan of the engine.

Another option worth considering would be the Motul Multi Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid, which keeps the engine in top-notch condition even at higher temperatures and promotes fuel economy.

My next favorite is the Castrol Transmax DEX/MERC. Apart from being backed by a reliable and trusted brand, it offers features like smoother shifts, low noise and high engine performance.

I will see you next time. Goodbye and take care!
