How To Start A Pressure Washer

While you might feel that starting a pressure washer is a complex task, I'm here to assure you that it's not.

By following the right procedures, even first-timers can get it right. Hi! I'm Stacy, and I've had a fair amount of experience using pressure washers. At my age, I love interacting with neighbors and remaining an active part of my community. To do my bit, I've helped several others install and operate their pressure washers as well.

You could say that I know how they work, irrespective of the brand and model. But, you have to keep in mind that if you don't operate a pressure washer the right way, you could end up damaging it. Apart from that, the cleaning session is likely to be ineffective as well.

On the contrary, by using proper technique, you'll find it much easier to execute the job without spending a lot of time. With this in mind, I've prepared a basic guide to help you all.

So, let me get right into it without wasting any more time.

Methods to Start a Pressure Washer

First, you have to know what kind of pressure washer you're using. Usually, there are two types of washers - those powered by gas and those powered by electricity. Accordingly, you'll see the power ranging from 2000 PSI to 4200 PSI. But, both these washers have to be started using different methods. Let’s look at them, one at a time.

Starting Gas Pressure Washers

Even before starting the gas pressure washer, it is necessary to follow a series of simple steps. For starters, you have to place it on a flat surface. Followed by this, it is best to make sure that the water strainer remains clean and happens to be in the correct place.

Then, you need to connect the garden hose with the main supply of water. The other end of the hose has to be connected to the inlet of the pressure washer. When it comes to the high-pressure hose, you have to connect it to the pressure washer outlet.

At this point, I must stress the importance of securing this power hose perfectly, so you can avoid any chances of it being displaced due to the high pressure.

Based on your requirements, you should connect the other end of the hose to a sprayer, powerful gun, or rotating brush. Then, set the valve for unloading as per your requirements. I would suggest you do this before you start on a job.

Once you've attached the appropriate nozzle based on the requirement of the job, you should check the levels of fuel and oil of the pressure washer.

Now, you have to go through these simple steps to actually start the washer.

  • Placing the fuel valve so it is in the open position
  • Moving the choke to the open position
  • Moving the engine throttle so that it is in the full-throttle position.
  • Moving the startup switch to the position marked “On”

Starting Electric Pressure Washers

Not only will you find an electric pressure washer to be lighter than its gas counterpart, but also easier to operate. I would advise you to handle these washers more carefully, but overall, you're bound to find it less time-consuming and simpler.

First off, you have to check whether the connector plug for electricity is put in properly where the power hub is located. You'll want to avoid any mistakes here since it could result in a short-circuit and subsequent fire.

Then, you'll have to take care of the water strainer. Be careful to check whether it is in the correct position. Also, try to keep it free of debris. You'll have to connect the inlet hose to both the inlet for the pressure washer and the one for water supply.

The next step involves connecting the high-pressure hose. One goes into the outlet of the washer, while the other is left free for the required attachments. You have to regulate the pressure depending on the kind of job the washer is expected to perform.

Once the nozzle attachment is chosen, it has to be secured in place using collar snaps. After the motor is started, the air has to be purged outside. Then, the cleaning attachment can be connected to the high-pressure hose.

There aren't any further steps after you’ve done all this; merely flicking the 'on' switch will get your washer functioning perfectly.

Safety Tips for Operating Pressure Washers

Although you now know how to operate both kinds of pressure washers, there are some tips for safety that you must keep in mind.

  • Under no circumstances should you forget to turn off the washer when you're taking a break or after the task is complete.
  • Loose connections are absolutely unacceptable, irrespective of whether it is the nozzle, hose, or electric connection.
  • You should never target the washer towards any fragile materials that won't be able to stand the intensity or the pressure.
  • Always ensure that the washers are kept far out of reach of any kids.
  • The best way to expand the lifespan of the washers is by storing them in places that are cool and dry.

Final Words

Operating a pressure washer is a pretty simple task, but you should keep the safety tips in mind. In all the time I've assisted other people, I've found them to be pretty quick learners.

I've also realized that electric variants are more popular, and they are easier to operate too. That said, you should try to be a little aware of the different components that a pressure washer has. Knowing their functions and where they fit will definitely help you figure out the operations better.

Now, I must run off to help another person figure out how to get their washer started. I take my leave here, but do reach out if you have queries.

Take care!
