How To Make A Hydrostatic Lawn Mower Faster

As most of my regular readers already know, lawn care is my dominant passion. And I like to help others with it too.

And when it comes to lawn care, my primary weapon remains my riding lawn mower. This is a machine I swear by, and as all my near and dear ones know, I spend considerable time learning all I can about riding lawn mowers in general.

So, when my neighbor Emily came to me with the problem of making her hydrostatic lawn mower faster, I was only too happy to lend a hand. First, I researched this type of mower’s workings and then found several methods to increase the speed.

Howdy! I’m Stacy Smith, and today I’m going to tell you how to make a hydrostatic lawn mower faster. After going through the following, you’ll be able to make the required modifications and get your lawn mowing done in less time.

So, let’s not delay any longer and get started.

How Do Hydrostatic Lawn Mowers Work?

So, how does a hydrostatic lawn mower work, exactly? This is something which I feel everyone should know before trying a hand at modifications to make it faster. These lawn mowers have specialized components that need extra maintenance and care.

The engines of this type of lawn mower use a combination of a hydraulic motor and hydrochloric pump. They also include a hydrostatic drive, power steering, and remote-controlled chutes. The gear mechanism on these mowers works using pressurized oil, which moves the pistons and generates the necessary power.

Like other riding lawn mowers, the speed can be regulated via a pedal, and these mowers can move forward and backward. This allows the user to change speeds easily, which is not usually possible with belt or gear-driven mowers.

The trouble with these mowers is that their speed levels start to dip over time and with excessive use. This means you’ll need more time to mow the same yard area, and your machine will also become less fuel-efficient.

That’s where the following methods come in; using them, you can improve the speed of any hydrostatic lawn mower easily.

Methods To Make A Hydrostatic Lawn Mower Faster

1. Use High-Octane Fuel

An essential step to make your hydrostatic lawn mower faster is to change the type of fuel. The kind of gas you’re putting into the mower impacts its speed to a large extent. The better the fuel quality, the faster the mower’s engine can work.

I recommend getting high-octane fuel for your mower. The octane rating is a measure of how efficiently the fuel can burn. Low-octane fuel is susceptible to premature ignition, which can lead to knocking in the engine. In contrast, high-octane varieties burn much better under pressure.

By getting high-octane fuel, you’ll ensure that the engine can utilize every drop of gas and provide better power. Keep in mind that this type of fuel costs more than regular gas, so you’ll have to ensure that it fits the budget.

2. Install Larger Tires

The next method involves upgrading to larger tires. Usually, people don’t pay much attention to lawn mower tires unless they go flat. But tire size impacts the speed of the mower to a large extent. And the tire pressure also plays an integral part in the mix.

The larger your lawn mower’s wheels, the more ground it can cover per rotation. So, installing larger tires can help in increasing the speed of any riding lawn mower. However, every mower model has a limit to the size of tire it can accommodate, so you’ll have to stick to the maximum capacity your model will allow.

3. Remove Extra Weight

It’s common sense that a heavier machine will move slower. So, if you can make your hydrostatic lawn mower lighter, then there’s a good chance its speed will increase. While not every component can be removed from the mower safely, there are certain parts that can be removed to lose weight.

Some common parts to strip away are the hood and tow hitch. In case you’re not too concerned with the cutting ability and only want speed, you can also do away with the cutting deck in exceptional circumstances.

4. Replace The Air Filters

The next hack to try is replacing the air filters. Over time, the air filters collect a lot of dirt and dust, impeding the carburetor’s air flow. As the carburetor gets less oxygen, fuel combustion efficiency drops, which results in slower speeds.

This means, if you clean the air filters, you’re likely to get better speeds out of any mower. Better yet, consider replacing them and getting new ones; just be sure that the filters you’re getting are compatible with your lawn mower model.

5. Do Away With The Governor

Finally, the last thing you can do to improve a hydrostatic lawn mower’s speed is removing the governor. This is a piece of equipment that regulates the engine’s RPM (rotations-per-minute), which means it essentially limits the mower’s speed. Once you remove the governor module, you can use the mower to its maximum possible speed.

That said, it’s essential to understand that the governor isn’t there just for the heck of it. It plays an indispensable role by protecting the engine from excessive wear-and-tear damage and overheating. So, removing it may result in costly engine repairs in the long run.

Final Words

The above five methods can go a long way towards improving the speed of any hydrostatic lawn mower. Along with that, don’t forget to maintain the mower regularly and get it serviced by professionals periodically.

I hope you’ll be able to make the above modifications yourself. Or, if you’re not technically inclined, then please take the help of someone who is. And ensure that all safety precautions are maintained during the modification process.

With that, I’ll now be taking your leave. Do remember to let me know how the modifications go by commenting below.

Till next time, take care!
