Growing up, I absolutely relished watching my father working on his cars in the garage. Although my father wasn’t a professional mechanic, he still used to take as many safety precautions as one. Upon asking, he shared how he narrowly escaped a fire outbreak while working in the garage. 

Since then, he’s always worked with utmost care and caution. Having said that, I learned all the safety measures and precautions from my father and have been following that to this day. 

As such, you’d be surprised to know there’s so much to watch out for a while working in a garage. Hence, I’m here to tell you how to ensure safety while working in the garage.

You don’t have to have years of experience to work in a garage, but you do need to take certain precautions to ensure your safety. Plus, if you don’t prepare yourself correctly or your garage for all the DIY car overhauls, you might end yourself in a dangerous, possibly fatal situation.

So, let’s plunge into some of the common dangers in the garage and how you can overcome them. 

1. Tuck Away All Those Hazardous Materials

Garages are home to a plethora of things, along with cars. Be it solvents, fertilizers, gasoline, paints, and a stack of other chemicals, people toss everything away in the garage. Not to deny, I did that too! But such careless tossing can lead to serious accidents. 

All such liquids and chemicals are flammable and dangerous. As such, if not stored properly, they can ignite a fire in your garage space. And so, I strongly advise you to lock up all the flammable items and chemicals in the cupboard of your garage. 

2. Light Up Your Garage Space Properly

Let’s be honest, the garage spaces are the most tightly packed spaces of our home as all the junks of the house make their way into the garage space. And so, what I recommended to my neighbors and even did myself was to improve the lighting of my garage.

Installing a pair of modern LED fixtures significantly brightened my otherwise dull and dim garage. Of course, my husband appreciates me for this as it helped him carry out all his tasks safely. From searching specific tools to driving in and out, he did everything without any difficulty.

3. Declutter and Organize Your Garage Space

Cramming up stuff makes the garage a chaotic space. And, the chaos in your garage, along with all the tools, wires, and chemicals, makes it a hub of accidents. As such, to keep my husband and sons safe from any mishap, I always declutter my garage. 

Growing up, I noticed my father organizing things in the garage. Now that I’ve been doing this for decades, I understood why he decluttered and organized things regularly. Although cleaning up the mountain of things is much of a task, it certainly saves your family members from possible injuries. 

4. Faulty Cords And Wiring

If you’ve never paid attention to the hanging wires in your garage space, now is the time to knuckle yourself down to fix those cords and wires. If left unattended, these cords can cause fire outbreaks. Although it’s a pretty back-breaking task, you must get that done without any delay. 

Get your wires, bulbs, and cords checked by the electrician and work stress-free in your garage. Our neighbor loves this suggestion and gets his wires and cords checked by a professional every now and then. 

5. Toss Away The Greasy Rags

Old t-shirts, towels, and other worn-out cloth make convenient rags. However, you should toss them in the bin when they get soiled with oil, gasoline, or grease. This is one of the best pieces of advice my father gave me decades ago. 

Because with the right ignition source, they can transform into a fireball and burn down your garage. Moreover, I strongly recommend you not wash them in the washing machine unless you want the next laundry load to reek, like the garage or workshop space.

Safety Measures You Can Follow To Prevent Accidents In The Garage

There isn’t anything to be afraid of while working in a garage. Moreover, with certain safety measures and precautions, you can make it an enjoyable task. Here, I have enlisted certain factors which my husband follows while working on his vehicle in the garage. 

• Don’t forget to wear protective glasses while working
• Oversized t-shirts are a big no-no!
• A fire extinguisher can come in handy in case of accidental firebreaks
• Tuck away hazardous chemicals
• Hush all the distractions and focus on your work
