How To Sterilize Soil So Nothing Will Grow

Frustrated with all the fungi, weeds, and pathogens on your soil? Then it’s about time you had it sterilized for good. 

Believe it or not, soil sterilization methods have been used for decades for potting soils to clear them of unwanted elements such as fungus and mold. Thus, it ensures that the pathogens don’t ruin the soil fertility and negatively affect plant growth.

Different Ways Of Soil Sterilization

Here are the various ways in which you can sterilize the soil. 

1. Hydrogen Peroxide 

While some people think it’s a complex method, others swear by it. From my personal experience, I can assure you that it is not that tough and that you won’t be disappointed with the results. 

First things first, get a bucket of water and apply hydrogen peroxide to it. After that, place the water in a sprayer. I strongly suggest using 3% or 35% hydrogen peroxide for the best results. 

Then, spray the solution to the soil, and you are good to go. But before spraying, ensure that you wear protective clothes and gloves to prevent burns and injuries. 

2. Solarization 

Solarization is mainly done when one needs massive amounts of soil to be sterilized. This process can purify an entire field or garden. 

To perform this method, you’ll need to cover the field or garden with a few layers of plastic covers to increase the soil temperature. This would make it easier for the soil to absorb the heat of the sun and initiate solarization. 

For sterilizing a smaller quantity of soil, I suggest that you place the soil in a pot, cover it with plastic, and then keep it under the sun. Remember to use transparent plastic rather than black or colored plastic that deflects solar energy. 

Also, you would want to use slightly thicker plastic; otherwise, you put it at risk of being destroyed by animals and winds. 

3. Heat 

This is the most commonly used and effective soil sterilization method. You can heat the soil to the threshold, dry heat the soil directly, or use steam to kill the harmful weed seeds, fungi, and other microorganisms. 

I found steaming soil to be a more efficient and quicker way to sterilize the soil. For this, boil water between 180 and 200°F for your microwave or up to 180°F for your cooker.
