If you're into gardening, then you should definitely try growing different kinds of vegetation. Here, the Dazzling Razzleberry Shrub can be a wonderful addition.

Not only are the flowers of a vibrant deep pink shade, but the leaves also start off with a rich greenness that turns into a lovely bronze color later in the year. Thanks to its showy demeanor and mound-like structure, this shrub makes lawns and gardens look great.

But, merely being convinced of its appearance won't help newcomers grow this shrub. You also need to know how to get the best yield and care for this plant, so as to spruce up the garden.

That's where I come in. My name is Stacy, and I've focused a lot of attention on gardening ever since I retired from being a teacher. Having done meticulous research by reading magazines, consuming TV shows and listening to podcasts, I can safely say that I know enough about the Dazzling Razzleberry Shrub to answer your queries.

I'll share my knowledge with you here and provide some useful tips. So, let us jump into the details without any delay.

What Is Dazzling Razzleberry Shrub?

Before we get ahead of ourselves, you'll find many people enquiring what exactly this plant is. It’s also known as the Chinese Witch Hazel, and is often trimmed and maintained as a bonsai. Hence, be it your garden or the insides of your house, the Dazzling Razzleberry Shrub fits right in.

Mostly, the display is best during springtime. While indigenous to Japan, China, and the Himalayas, this shrub didn't have much of a presence in the west. However, nurseries started off by picking the pink variant around the 90s, until its popularity grew by quite a margin.

Varieties Of Dazzling Razzleberry Shrub

Now that you know what this plant is, you might consider different variants of the Dazzling Razzleberry Shrub. It'll help you narrow down on which one would suit your lawn or garden the most. The following are some of the common variants:

1. Ruby Fringe Flowers

This option is preferred by many, not just because of the striking shade, but also because it comes in a compact size. While you can get a potted option, this plant does grow a bit as it matures.

2. Purple Majesty

You'll see that this plant is larger in size than the ruby variant. It also grows a little more. As a result, it arrives in a two-gallon pot.

3. Dwarf White Blossoms

Also known as Jazz Hands by sellers, this option sees a small shrub in a decorative pot. Understandably, the plant doesn't grow too much during its lifetime.

4. Hillier Compacta

If you're in the market for shrubs you can use for ground cover, then choose this option. It has a spreading form and is adorned with small white flowers.

Planting Dazzling Razzleberry Shrub

When I first decided to get this shrub for my garden, I wasn’t sure what would be the best time to plant it. But, after consulting some expert sources, it became evident that it is best to plant it in the fall.

However, if it happens to arrive in a pot, then summer or spring is an equally good time to plant it. Ultimately, you have to avoid periods of frost and intense heat conditions. Some tips you need to keep in mind include –

  • Although this shrub loves the sun, especially in winter, it cannot stand the sweltering summer temperatures
  • During summer afternoons, keeping this plant in a light shade is ideal
  • To extend its blooming during winter, try to shelter it from the cold winter winds

You can also choose to grow this shrub in pots. Since the rate of growth is slow, and its size as an adult is rather small, this plant can be placed in pots on terraces. Its hardiness allows it to survive there. However, you should take care of a couple of things to improve longevity.

I haven’t grown shrubs in pots much, so it was a steep learning curve for me, but these tips are bound to come in handy to help your Dazzling Razzleberry Shrub survive.

  • Make sure drainage options are proper
  • Put a good soil mix into the pot
  • Add fertilizer once a year
  • If there is a heatwave or a long dry spell, then add water as per the need of your shrub

What Kind Of Soil Is Best Suited?

Now that we've come to planting this shrub, you might be wondering what kind of soil is best suited for it. After all, any proper gardening enthusiast is up for ordering soil, depending on the needs of plants; in fact I've done so myself.

Here, you'll see the shrub preferring rich soil, but it can tolerate clay as well. You only have to be mindful about avoiding boggy areas. I've seen magazines recommend acidic soil, but this shrub seems to hold its own in alkaline soils as well.

Transplanting Dazzling Razzleberry Shrubs

If you're impatient, which isn't exactly a virtue in a gardener, then you might want a quick result. In such cases, it is best to take a fully grown plant, which is likely to arrive in a pot, and then transplant it to your lawn or garden. It is a simple enough process, but you need to follow some steps.

First, take a newly growing softwood, and mark six inches. Then remove the leaves from the bottom of the stem. While doing so, make sure the end of the cutting is dipped into a medium for rooting. Try preparing a clean container that has drainage holes. Make sure there is a mixture of half peat and half perlite. Then, make a hole in the dirt before inserting the cutting.

Cover it with a plastic bag, and keep the soil moist but not soggy. Also, place it in indirect sunlight. Within four to six weeks, roots will start growing. You can allow the plant to adequately grow in the container, before moving it to the garden.

Caring And Pruning Dazzling Razzleberry Shrubs

Once the plants start to grow, the next obvious step is to take care of them. Unlike other vegetation in your garden, you’ll see this shrub requires almost no maintenance. It is quite hardy and tolerant to droughts.

Although I try to water them regularly, I’ve noticed these shrubs pull through long dry spells without any supplementary moisture. You’ll see that regular pruning isn’t really needed since the growth is slow.

But, when it comes to pruning them to the shape of hedges or fences, the shrubs are amazingly tolerant of different techniques. I use these shrubs to line the walls of my fence, and by now, they’ve become one with the structure. Obviously, some maintenance is needed, but it is very little effort for the kind of beautification you get.

Usually, I don’t apply any fertilizer separately to these, but if they seem like they could use a little extra nutrition, then go with a basic mix to help in growth spurts.

That said, you can keep some tips in mind, including –

  • Removing dry and deadwood on a regular basis, especially when summer is coming to an end
  • When it comes to balancing or reducing branches, you should wait until blooming stops
  • Use mulch made from pine bark for its natural acidity and water retention abilities

Watering Dazzling Razzleberry Shrubs

Naturally, a key aspect of caring for these shrubs is watering them. Now, most gardeners tend to apply water to all their vegetation each day at a fixed time. However, I’ve found there is more to the art of gardening than mechanically watering plants.

Especially when it comes to Dazzling Razzleberry Shrubs, you’ll find it best to water the plants when it is hot and during the first two years after you’ve planted them. As far as winters are concerned, if it is not raining, you’re advised to water these shrubs when the ground is dry, and water isn’t freezing; this results in proper blooming.

Apart from what I’ve outlined, keep a few other pointers in mind as far as watering is concerned.

  • During summers, try to water in the evenings so it doesn’t evaporate
  • In winters, always water during daytime and never in evenings
  • Only water in winters if there is no chance of freezing

Treating Diseases In Dazzling Razzleberry Shrubs

Every gardener's nightmare is fighting pests and diseases that might affect their vegetation. I've spent quite a lot of time on various products, in order to avoid such situations. Thankfully, Dazzling Razzleberry has very few serious problems.

Of course, rot in roots can be an issue if the soil isn't properly drained. So, the first step is to ensure that your plants are situated in soil with correct drainage. On top of that, galls might appear on the stems of shrubs.

Usually, Pseudomonas savastanoi is to blame for these swellings. In case you notice it before buying the plant, then I suggest you choose another option. However, if these galls appear after you've planted the shrubs, then it is best to cut the branch by several inches above the gall. Then, get rid of the prunings and disinfect the pruner to effectively combat the situation.

Companion For Dazzling Razzleberry Shrubs

You'll see how these shrubs set themselves apart by being unique. Not only is the fragrance distinct, but the flowers also appear in the middle of winter. In fact, many consider it to be one of the most beautiful winter-blooming shrubs.

As a result, several gardeners tend to set it as a standalone addition to their landscape. However, I've found that it goes really well with companion plants like lily turf, spiraea, Japanese forest grass, heavenly bamboo, lavender, and hydrangeas, among others.

Tips For Design And Landscaping

If you're wondering how to incorporate this shrub, I've got some tips for you. Did I mention that apart from gardening, I like to ensure my house looks good all the time? If you're an active member of the community and tend to have guests over, then these dazzling installations will surely garner attention and praise.

The first thing you can do is to use different variants of these shrubs for a backdrop that is more dramatic. Try using it in a mixed border, along a fence or wall. If you're going for a unique look, you can train these shrubs to grow along a trellis or a fence. Since they're okay with pruning techniques, you might also snip away at bits till it takes the form you desire.

Some gardeners might want an upright variant. In this case, train it to become like a small tree by removing side branches from the main trunk as it keeps growing. And in the event that you want some contrasting colors in your garden, mix the purple variants with vegetation that is greener. The striking colors will lend a different look to your setup.

Since these plants are primarily Asian in origin, several gardening enthusiasts rely on them for Asian landscapes. In such situations, you should place it along a slope or the top of a low wall of rocks.

And in case you want to draw attention to a specific plant, maybe near your entryway, then place this shrub in a ceramic pot of similar or complementary color. If you prefer natural-looking landscapes, you can use this shrub as a border with regional vegetation. It also goes to support wildlife and insect pollinators.

Final Words

Now that you're familiar with all the steps needed to grow Dazzling Razzleberry Shrubs, you should be able to go about it with relative ease.

Gardening is not an easy task, and often most efforts go unrewarded. Luckily, here you have a shrub that doesn't need much maintenance but is sure to produce a high yield. All you have to do is keep in mind the tips I've outlined.  That said, be sure to reach out if you have any queries.
