It wasn’t too long ago that my son joined a basketball club in the city. After a week of heavy play, he managed to tear a hole through his favorite pair of trainers.
Of course, ordinary running shoes are not built for a highly mobile game like basketball. Call it a coincidence, but I was looking for a pair of strong, lightweight shoes too and began my search for basketball shoes.

With the strong positive feedback he provided, I had my expectations set high. Let’s find out what this PEAK sneakers’ performance looks like.

The moment I put on these shoes, I got a sense of why they were named so. To be lightning-fast, an object needs to be feathery light. PEAK’s Lightning Shoes have managed just that and it was almost as if I wasn’t wearing any shoes at all.
Unlike the Lockdown 5, these shoes fit my son’s relatively wider feet to a tee. No chafing, no issues with the fit. Combining style and comfort, they have met almost all my expectations.
What’s There Not To Like About It?
It wasn’t very frequent, but the shoelaces did seem to come loose from time to time. This almost resulted in my son tripping and falling - it could have caused an injury if he didn’t catch himself mid-fall. And let’s face it, buying new laces separately is a bit of a hassle.

Nike’s a veteran in the shoemaking business and with the Trey 5, it has introduced another entry into the basketball shoes market. The Trey 5 is said to be one of the better entry-level basketball shoes. Let’s find out how good these shoes are.

For entry-level basketball shoes, the Trey 5 is made for the playing field. These are stylish and function well for light players. Colored black, contrasted with a radiant red, along with a splash of white, the design caught my eye right out of the box. But the Trey 5 doesn’t just excel at style.
The shoes have an impressive on-court grip, which is pretty much essential for a basketball player. My son tends to make sharp movements on the court and the Trey 5 shoes support his playstyle very well.
That’s not all; they boast a Renew foam cushion setup for comfort and impact resistance. The midsole is made from dual-density foam for added cushioning and response. Priced reasonably, the Trey 5 impressed me with its performance and style.
What’s There To Like About It?
The Trey 5, like the Lou Williams Lightning Shoes, are feathery light. The Renew foam cushion system works as well as described. The comfort is excellent and causes minimal issues in the long run.
Being one of the more affordable entries in the basketball shoe segment, they surprised me with the premium feel and performance they offered. They gripped equally well in the yard as they did on the court and I bet they’d make for great shoes for light players.
What’s There Not To Like About It?
Like the Lockdown 5, the Trey 5 are narrower than ideal. As a result, my son spoke of some discomfort after wearing them for a few hours. The midsole also leaves a bit to be desired with its cushioning, as it can flatten after a few weeks’ use.

4. PUMA Uproar PA Palace Basketball Shoes
While looking for basketball shoes to buy, I was surprised to learn that Puma hasn’t made many additions to the basketball shoe market despite being such a prominent name. But with the Uproar PA, Puma has made a significant impression on me. Let’s find out how.
Product Highlights
The first thing to note here is that the upper is, surprisingly enough, made of a synthetic material. It’s a notable departure from the fabric mesh that’s standard in the segment. That said, the material felt robust and well-made on my feet, so it was not an issue whatsoever. Puma did make this shoe tongue out of a mesh though.
For the outsole, Puma has employed a rubber compound. The shoes employ HYBRID technology for cushioning. As far as the insole is concerned, the cushioning is said to use Puma’s IGNITE tech in conjunction with NRGY foam. To cut the long story short, these shoes are made to be durable and cushion well.
Where other shoes offer colors for variety, the Uproar has different designs altogether while boasting the same features across the board. The PA Palace variant that I tried had the good old white, red, and blue colors.
What’s There To Like About It?
Traction came to my notice the moment I put the Uproar PA on. A few paces in my yard were enough to solidify my opinion on these: the grip they offer is top-notch. The Uproar PA works well on all kinds of flat surfaces consistently.
When it comes to comfort, I have no complaints at all. Right out of the box, the fit is quite snug, cozy, and ideal for wider feet.
What’s There Not To Like About It?
The HYBRID tech Puma used felt a little too firm for my liking. Considering the price point, I believe that Puma could have made the Uproar PA feel a little more premium as well. The materials they’re made from vary from one variant to the next, so your experience may vary with the model you choose.

5. FitVille High Top Rebound Core Basketball Shoes
FitVille’s High Top sneakers are based on the Rebound Core, but with added features. Bringing a classic look and feel to the table, the FitVille High Tops put forth their A-game in the basketball sneakers segment.

These are High Tops, meaning that they provide excellent ankle support in addition to all the bells and whistles that you get from basketball shoes.
The mesh is a combination of suede and fabric, leaning into the classic feel of the sneakers. It provides ample support and resists wear and tear like few others.
Moving on, FitVille has incorporated the tried-and-tested PropelCore soles for soft cushioning and comfort. The PropelCore soles possess superb shock-absorbing qualities as well, making these ideal for everyday use as well.
Much like the Rebound Core, the High Tops have a robust outsole that provides great heel support. Your basketball games will be smoother and more comfortable with the High Tops on your feet. The toe box is also wide and accommodating for people with big feet, so you won’t have to worry about a narrow fit.
What’s There To Like About It?
The first thing to note here is that the FitVille High Tops have a wider toe box. This has been a shortcoming in a couple of the shoes I reviewed earlier, such as the Nike Trey 5 or Under Armour’s Lockdown 5.
I think that FitVille has struck a great balance between comfort and performance. The suede and fabric upper feels premium, the insole and outsole provide great cushioning, and the outsole will withstand a season’s worth of play. If you’re a light basketball player like me, the FitVille High Tops may last even longer.
What’s There Not To Like About It?
When compared to basketball sneakers like the Trey 5, I found that the High Tops didn’t perform as well in terms of traction. Something I would have liked FitVille to add was a pull-up loop in the back. The omission is a little surprising since it’s a standard for most sports trainers.

There’s a lot that goes into buying a pair of basketball shoes. They are performance footwear designed for high-octane sports action. It can be daunting, I know, but basketball's a serious business.
The things to consider are not just limited to cushioning and traction. Here, I’ve outlined a few criteria that you should keep in mind when buying a pair.
1. The Shoe Structure
The structure is just as important as the other, more obvious qualities of shoes like fit and comfort. There are several sub-categories to this, such as the ankle height, the heel support, and the materials used in a shoe’s making.
Ankle height is something that each basketball player will choose depending on their position on the field. There are three broad categories of ankle height - high tops, mid tops, and low tops. The higher the ankle, the more support the shoe will offer.
If you’re prioritizing speed and flexibility, low-top shoes would be preferable for you. High-top shoes provide extra ankle support and better stability at the cost of speed and flexibility. There’s a sweet spot in the middle with the mid-top shoes, which offer a little bit of everything. I find mid-tops the most appealing for both design and function.
Proper heel support is often glanced over while looking for shoes. Trust me, I’ve made this mistake before. I’ve injured my heel a couple of times due to a lack of proper heel support. I have learned my lesson and I have learned it well. Whichever pair of shoes you choose, consider the ones which have ample cushioning inside and out.
2. Cushioning
Cushioning is primarily dependent on the midsole and insole of a shoe. These work in tandem with one another to provide compression. Your personal preference will determine what kind of cushioning suits you the best. However, if the compression is too high or too low, it is bound to make your playing experience unpleasant.
As far as indoor performance is considered, the cushioning can be on the softer side. The opposite is true for outdoor performance. I stick to softer compression in general, since my playing experience is generally limited to the yard. My son likes to use his sneakers for everyday use as well, so he prefers firmer shoes.
3. Grip
The grip a shoe offers is determined by the outsole. Rubber is used for making most sports shoe outsoles and the grip it offers depends on the grooves. Traction patterns should ideally stretch to the edges so that you don’t slip while making sudden movements.
4. Durability
A pair of basketball shoes is no good if it can’t withstand a season’s worth of play. There’s nothing that knocks the wind out of a game of basketball like a tear in your basketball shoes.
The durability hinges on the materials used to make a set of sneakers. You’ll know if your trainers have run their course when the mesh upper stretches out or the midsole flattens.
5. Fit
Ill-fitting shoes will, inevitably, lead to a less-than-ideal playing experience. You wouldn’t want your shoes to fly off your foot in the middle of play, or for them to be tight enough to squeeze your toes. There should be a gap of about half an inch between your toes and the end of your shoe for a good fit.
You should also be wary of the width of your shoes. If they are too narrow, you’ll have an unpleasant playing experience and may have to replace them rather soon.
6. Aesthetic Appeal
Now, this is where personal preference will dictate what you should choose, rather than the material a pair of shoes uses. When it comes to aesthetics, there is no guide that applies universally to anything, let alone shoes.
When buying a pair of basketball shoes, looks won’t be the first thing you’d want. Vibrant and flashy looks are a bonus on top of the function that sneakers bring to the table.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not every pair of basketball shoes is made with daily usage in consideration. Some of them will serve you well as walking shoes, while others are made just for the court. I was able to do so with the Under Armour Lockdown 5 just fine.
Your everyday sports shoes will, inevitably, give out from underneath your feet. Basketball shoes are designed to be sturdier and have a better grip on flat surfaces. Personally, I would suggest using basketball shoes over your trainers, as they have better foot support and cushioning.
For one, they are built with sturdiness and heavy play in mind. Everyday running shoes usually won’t last a few games of basketball, as my son found out.

If you wear high-top shoes to your daily workout session, the ankle support they provide will lower the risk of ankle injuries as well.
My Final Recommendation
Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by the experience these sneakers offered. Each of these has an area of specialization and it shows in their performance. The Nike Trey 5 VIII and Puma Uproar PA excel at traction, while Under Armour Lockdown 5 and PEAK Lightning Basketball shoes are comfortable and lightweight.Â
That said, my favorite pair of basketball shoes has to be the FitVille High Tops. With a wider toe box, they quickly became my son’s preferred pair of shoes as well. The style, the make, and the cushioning feel premium and so, they are a shoo-in for the best basketball shoes for wide feet.Â
The gap separating these basketball shoes in terms of performance is quite slim, so you can just as easily pick one over the other. It all comes down to what you prefer, after all.Â
