Water shortage has become a real issue, and it is very important to start regulating its use. And that is where rain barrels come in.

Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and I am very enthusiastic about gardening and taking care of my plants. However, as plants need regular water to stay healthy, I was very concerned about keeping them in the right shape, especially with the severe water shortage happening in different parts of the world.

Having said this, the process of searching for the best rain barrel can be tiresome. Hence, I decided to make this list of the top 5 rain barrels on the market today.

Top 5 Rain Barrels

1. RTS Companies Inc 551000300A8081

RTS Companies Inc 551000300A8081

I was looking for a barrel with a flat back for my yard when I came across the RTS Companies Inc 551000300A8081. It’s distinct design helps it stand flat against almost any wall, no matter the surface material.

Product Highlights

The best part about this unit is that it is made of 100% recycled plastic, which is a perfect option for those who are looking for an environmentally-friendly barrel. And being made of plastic, the body is very durable, and the color remains intact.

Since the water will be kept outdoors, there are high chances that insects and bugs will crawl into it. But I was glad to find that the package came with a mesh for the top, which prevents the entry of insects in the barrel. Hence, the water is kept fresh, and you can use it over time.

Plus, if you want to connect it to a hose, it has a plastic spigot shut-off valve, which will help you connect the hose. You can also purchase a compatible stand from the same brand, which will come in handy for filling smaller containers like water cans.

What’s There To Like About It?

My husband found the oak barrel texture to be authentic and unique. He thinks it is a perfect addition to rustic or traditional décor, and I also thought adding it to the backyard enhanced the outdoor setup.

Moreover, it has a capacity of 50 gallons, which means a lot of water can be stored at a time. Even if it rains continuously, water will not spill out, and you can keep it for days when it does not rain.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

I noticed a slight flaw when the barrel became completely full, which did disappoint me a little. The back bent slightly and pushed against my wall, which probably happened because of the exerting water pressure. So, I’d suggest placing it slightly away from the wall during the rainy season.

Pros and Cons of RTS Companies Inc 551000300A8081

Pros

  • Made with recycled plastic
  • 50 gallons capacity
  • Mesh screen to catch insects
  • Can be connected to other barrels

Cons

  • Back may bend slightly when filled

  • 50-Gallon Capacity: Provides ample storage for harvested rainwater, ideal for watering gardens, lawns, and plants.
  • Durable Construction: Made from UV-resistant polyethylene for long-lasting durability and protection from the elements. Made of 100% Recycled plastic.
  • Overflow Valve: Built-in overflow valve for managing excess water and the option to connect multiple barrels for increased storage.

2. VINGLI Rain Barrel

VINGLI Rain Barrel

If durability is your topmost priority, then the next option may just be ylur match. The VINGLI Rain Barrel offers a sustainable solution for all those who are looking for effective rainwater harvesting. And it comes with a hoard of benefits discussed below.

Product Highlights

The brand understands that leakage is one of the major problems, resulting in loss of water. So, to prevent all forms of leakage, it offers 2 rubber rings for each water outflow valve. One of the rubber rings go inside, and the other has to be attached outside that same valve. This would create a tight seal to prevent any form of water loss.

The unit is also available in 3 sizes, and although I am talking about the 50-gallon model here, you will also get variants with 66 gallons and 100 gallons capacity. Each comes with a foldable design, which makes storage very easy.

Plus, it is made of a high-quality PVC frame that is not prone to corrosion. It can easily withstand adverse weather conditions and still remain intact. I found it to be very tough and durable as the material does not crack easily, thereby supporting a prolonged service life..

What’s There To Like About It?

Many traditional barrels crack in winter because of the low temperatures and severe cold. But the PVC is thick and will not crack even in the cold weather. And there is a mesh on top, which prevents leaves and insects from contaminating the water.

Since it does not rain the entire year, I was looking for something that could be stored in the utility and garage room. And I was glad that this model could be folded and stored to occupy minimum space.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

After using it for a while, I realised that the barrel will need a stand. You can either decide to make one using items at home or purchase one separately, without which it may become a bit problematic to secure its position, especially during strong winds.

Pros and Cons of VINGLI Rain Barrel

Pros

  • Crack free and durable
  • Thick PVC material
  • 2 rubber rings to prevent leakage
  • Foldable design for easy storage
  • Top mesh keeps impurities away

Cons

  • May need a stand

  • HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS: Our rain barrel is made from PVC frame and anti-corrosion PVC mesh fabric. It is designed for long-term usage even in the cold winter time. Unlike traditional barrels, this barrel is crack-free and more durable.
  • PREVENT LEAKAGE: Two rubber rings come with each spigot and water outflow valve. Install one ruber ring inside, the other one outside of the barrel can efficiently prevent leakage. Top mesh design keeps leaves, insects away from your clear water.

3. Mirainbarrel Rain Barrel

Mirainbarrel Rain Barrel

Up next, I have discussed another upcycled unit made from food-grade plastic. The Mirainbarrel Rain Barrel is a sustainable choice to make, and doesn’t really add to your plastic consumption. Read on to know about its bells and whistles.

Product Highlights

First and foremost, the plastic material is extracted from previous water barrels, which are then repurposed. And being of food-grade quality, it does not contain any pollutants, enabling you to use the water for various purposes.

Like its predecessors, there is a plastic mesh screen on the top of this barrel, which prevents insects and leaves from entering the barrel. Besides, the screen can be twisted and taken out when needed. In fact, my neighbor’s kid could also twist and take the lid out whenever needed.

And if you are worried about leakage, rest assured that there will be none as the top is sealed well with 100% silicone caulk. Apart from that, it has a new brass overflow valve and a spigot. The brass will prevent any leakage from the openings when not in use.

Moreover, this unit can withstand very cold temperatures and will not break or crack open. Hence, you don’t have to strain your nerves for moving it indoors when not in use.

What’s There To Like About It?

My friend Angie is truly conscious of the environment, and she personally loved this uint. The waterproof design and the heavy-duty capacity both worked out well for her needs. And I’m sure it will fit the requirements of medium to small-sized gardens.

Moreover, it measures 22 x 22 x 41 inches and will not take up too much space. I was able to place 2 of these in my yard easily, and there was still enough space left for all my plants.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

The barrel I received is probably made from the plastic of a food barrel, so there were food bits and stains stuck on the sides. Since this can attract a lot of bugs, and I had to put in some extra effort to wash it thoroughly before use. This took quite a lot of time and I was pretty exhausted afterwards.

Pros and Cons of Mirainbarrel Rain Barrel

Pros

  • Upcycled food-grade barrel
  • 100% waterproof silicon
  • On/off twist top lid provided
  • Downspout adapter added

Cons

  • Had some food stains
Rain Barrel, DIY Kit, Made from Previously Used Food Grade Barrel, Upcycled, Recycled, 58 Gallon Size
  • Used Food Grade Repurposed Recycled Plastic Barrel, previously used to hold olives
  • New brass spigot and new brass overflow valve
  • Easy on/off twist top lid with new plastic mesh screen

4. LOSTRONAUT Water Tank

LOSTRONAUT Water Tank

I was looking for a collapsible barrel, and that’s when the LOSTRONAUT water tank caught my attention. It is an eco-friendly and smart solution to conserve water, and I was able to save quite a lot of water during periods of drought.

Product Highlights

First of all, this option comes with 25 garden and lawn tags, which are colored differently. Color tags will help in labeling your plants, and you will never get confused with the saplings. Needless to say, the gardener in me rejoiced to the fullest!

Moving on, the unit is made of 3-ply PVC, which is of the highest quality and is equipped with a tough zipper on top. The PVC material is resistant to cold weather and UV light and will not corrode over time.

Thanks to its easy to assemble, and I could accomplish the task on my own. What’s more, its collapsible design means you can store it practically anywhere without taking up much storage space. Last, it has 6 sturdy legs, which ensure that the body does not bend under pressure.

What’s There To Like About It?

This barrel came with a high-flow spigot, overflow spout, downspout spigot, and leak proof washers. Everything was present inside the box, and assembly was really easy. I hate spending hours trying to assemble products, and this was indeed impressive.

Not only that, but the structure is also freeze-resistant and will not crack in cold weather. So, in case you see a lot of snow, you can still leave it outdoors.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

On receiving the barrel, I found that one of the legs was bent, which was likely caused by  inefficient packing. The company did provide a replacement after a few days, but it took some time, and the rain had already started. So, I would recommend ordering this beforehand to accommodate the replacement time.

Pros and Cons of LOSTRONAUT Water Tank

Pros

  • Capacity of 53 gallons
  • Made of 3-ply PVC material
  • 25 colorful garden tags included
  • Sustainable and eco-friendly system

Cons

  • Inefficient shipping

5. Goplus Portable Rain Barrel

Goplus Portable Rain Barrel

If you are looking for a green-colored product that will easily blend with the surrounding, then the Goplus Portable Rain Barrel will fit perfectly. It saves water by 40% and will ensure all your plants stay healthy during dry weather.

Product Highlights

First things first, this unit is made of anti-corrosive PVC, which provides the body with a tough exterior. It is durable and can be folded easily for transportation and storage purposes.

Plus, it is extremely easy to use, and all you need to really do is just place it below a downspout to let the water flow into the barrel through the mesh. The mesh is anti-corrosive and will filter out the impurities. Once it is full, the excess water will flow out from the top drain pipe.

Moreover, it comes with a capacity of 53 gallons and can water your plants for an entire week. In case you want a bigger option, you can opt for other sizes offered by the same brand. Overall, its efficiency and variation is quite impressive.

What’s There To Like About It?

There are 2 percolate knobs on top, which are very easy to install and just need to be tightened to prevent any form of leakage. These work especially well when the rain has stopped and you need to preserve the water for future use.

Beyond that, it weighs a mere 4.5 lbs. without water and can be carried by anybody. In case you have less physical strength, you won’t face a lot of troubles moving it around.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

The one issue that bothered me during use was that the legs were not very strong, which caused the legs to bend when the barrel was completely filled. I will recommend that you attach bricks below it to keep it stable, which will prevent it from tilting or collapsing when it rains heavily.

Pros and Cons of Goplus Portable Rain Barrel

Pros

  • PVC mesh cloth is anti-corrosive
  • No forms of leakage
  • Color matches with the surrounding
  • 53 gallons capacity

Cons

Buyers Guide

Now that you know about the top 5 rain barrels, let me tell you about some of the essential factors to keep in mind. Remember that people have different requirements, and the most expensive product does not necessarily have to be the best option. For example, my friend Angie and I decided to purchase the barrels together, and while I wanted a compact one, she wanted something big.

Hence, my husband and I did a lot of research before purchasing and I decided to put it all together in the form of this buyer’s guide.

So, let’s dive in!

1. Material Used

When sustainability is on your mind, you would be expecting the materials used to make the barrel to be eco-friendly. I always prefer it that way but the problem here is that most options are made of plastic. This is because plastic is one of the only options that can sustain long rain showers without decaying over time.

So, I generally opt for recycled or recyclable plastic, which would not cause immediate harm to the environment and would not add to the waste. Other than that, you can also opt for durable PVC, which will last for years and would not corrode. And since it will last for a long time, you won’t need to exchange or replace it and you will not be adding to the plastic wastes as frequently.

But keep in mind that some products will not work well with ice and snow and are prone to cracking in very low temperatures. Please talk to the customer care representatives if necessary and get an understanding of the material and its capacity.

2. Size

How much rain does your area receive? Your answer will help in deciding the size of the barrel that you want. If there is average rainfall, a 50-gallon option will be perfect. It is medium-sized and will fit right into your backyard without taking too much space.

I did not want a huge barrel covering a lot of garden space to eventually hide some of the smaller plants. Hence, 50-gallon worked well for me, but my friend Angie opted for a 100-gallon barrel because a smaller one would probably overflow with heavy rainfall.

Having said that, you will find other options that are larger and smaller in size. So, decide on one depending on your specific needs.

3. Storage

Some rain barrels can be easily folded and stored in any place. They are collapsible and can even be transported by your car. As such, you can buy a collapsible model if you are not planning to use it throughout the year. This also applies to cold places where there is heavy snowing, and you would want to keep the barrel indoors.

4. Mesh

A mesh on top is necessary to keep dirt and debris away and the best rain barrels will invariably have one

However, some mesh tops are made of iron or steel, and that could lead to the formation of rust. I always prefer purchasing barrels with meshes that do not corrode or catch rust. It is supposed to protect and keep the water free from impurities, and hence, it needs to be durable.

Also, check if the mesh stays in place even when water falls on it in full force. The downspout might be just above it, and the mesh might shit in its place due to high water pressure. Hence, the mesh should be held in place tightly.

5. Leakage

Leakage mainly happens when there are gaps near the valves. If the valves are well covered with rubber on both sides, then leakage should be prevented. My husband checked every valve and opening for leaks before he installed it in the yard. This way, you can also get it replaced within the replacement window.

Furthermore, I want to add a word of advice here: if you see that the water barrel is bending over time due to water pressure, solve it immediately as otherwise, water will start leaking. Add some extra bricks on the sides, and that will help keeping it firm.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can Water Go Bad Over Time?

Water doesn’t turn bad per se, but the chemical composition can change over time. This generally happens when biological pathogens and chemical compounds make it contaminated. You can keep the water in a cool place away from concrete to maintain the quality.

2. What To Do When A Barrel Exceeds Capacity?

If your rain barrel is full, then water will flow out of the overflow valve. Now, if it is not stable, then there is a chance that it can tip over. Hence, make sure that there is a strong base that will support the overall structure.

3. When Should I Empty The Barrel?

The barrel will need to be emptied every time you plan to clean it. This should be done every alternate month if you are using it constantly. Otherwise, there might be bacterial growth underneath.

Also, once the barrel is full, put the cover on top and store it. Empty it when needed but keep it covered until then. This will keep the water fresh, and the barrel will last longer.

My Final Recommendations

Once you get used to barrels, the water bills will decrease a lot, and you will be saving a lot of water. But remember to purchase the right size as per your needs. In case you have a number of downspouts, purchase multiple small-sized barrels and keep them at different places.

Now, before wrapping up today’s guide, I will take you through my favorites. The RTS Companies Inc 551000300A8081 is perfect if you don’t want to put in a lot of effort for placement purposes. At the same time, my husband liked the VINGLI Rain Barrel for its durability and sturdiness.

With this, I will take your leave. You can let me know about any further queries in the comment section below.

Till the next time!
