The full-form of 24D is Dimethylamine salt of 2,4, which means it is a concentrated solution and needs to be mixed with water. Getting this balance of water to 24D is important, and any external water exposure can dilute the solution.
When the solution is applied onto a surface (like a blade of grass) with water, the 24D glyphosate will mix on the surface of the leaf. From here, this mixed solution will most likely roll off the plant. And even if it is absorbed, the effectiveness is dramatically decreased. As such, it is recommended not to spray wet grass as the results will not manifest to the level that it should be at.
The aim of the 24D application is to lightly mist the blades of grass in the solution, so any raindrops will prevent that. These droplets act as a barrier and will take any applied herbicide into the soil or dilute it even if it is absorbed by the grass. If you have no choice but to treat the grass after it has rained, then you can try, but make sure you allow the droplets to settle and the grass to dry a little.
Early morning is commonly seen to bring a layer of dew on the grass that remains until the sun is bright enough to evaporate it. One of the easiest ways to work around this is simply waiting for around midday to get the best results from your 24D. In fact, this is the best time to spray as the grass will also be at its driest, improving the effectiveness of the herbicide in preventing any weeds from encroaching.
