Do Radio Apps Use Data

While you may be disappointed to know that all radio apps use data, what if I tell you that it is possible to manage consumption?

Yes, you have heard me right. It is possible to reduce consumption when you stream audio on the online radio apps. Data is becoming costly by the day, and it is not surprising to know that you would want to monitor the usage. While certain apps allow you to download music for offline use, radio apps don’t as they stream broadcast music live.

Like you, I have racked my mind over this question: do radio apps use data? I kept thinking if there was any way to listen to the radio on my phone without using data. So, I did some research on my own.

Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and I am here to share the findings with you today. In this guide, you will get to know all about radio apps using data and how to monitor it

So, without further delay, let’s dive right in!

Is It Possible To Map Radio Data Usage?

Definitely! There’s no doubt by now that the radio apps consume a good amount of data, which you can track through your phone’s settings. And I would always say that it is better to be cautious than regret paying hefty data bills by the end of the month.

If you are using an android phone, I’d suggest that you go to the “Data Manager” option in the settings. In case the app does not allow access, you can always check the data usage in the data application option. You will then be able to figure out which app is consuming how much data.

Apart from that, you may find some third-party applications on the Play Store that will enable you to track the amount of data the radio apps consume. Some of these applications even let you set a usage limit and notify you as soon as the limit is exceeded.

Do All Radio Apps Require Data?

Unless you use an in-built tuner, then chances are that you won’t be able to save any data while using radio apps. But I can assure you that most radio apps on the internet use more or less the same amount of data. This is because all the apps use the same type of audio codes.

As a result, it is quite challenging to understand which apps use the most or the least amount of data. The best thing you can do in this regard is try to download an app that lets you control the data use.

And I have found an effective way to reduce data usage this way. I lower the audio quality from standard 160 kbps to 64 kbps, which brings down the data consumption significantly. From what I have observed,  iTunes Radio generally uses around 35MB of data every hour. On the other hand, apps like Spotify use around 43 MB of data when you are streaming on mobile data.

How Much Data Do The Apps Consume When You Stream?

There’s no single answer to this, as a range of factors determines the total data consumption. On average, you will end up spending between 100 kbps and 45 mbps of data. But  you do not need to worry too much if you are connected to a WiFi connection, as the data consumption will not cause much trouble.

And as I have already mentioned, you can always reduce consumption by lowering the quality of streaming. If you are not aware, let me tell you that most radio apps support streaming at 160 kbps. So, choosing an app that lets you toggle between the quality can be of great help.

In case you have a good smartphone and want to enjoy high-quality music, you can easily shift to 320 kbps. This would help you engage in a better radio experience.

How To Reduce Data Consumption On Streaming Apps?

I know how badly you have been waiting for this section, so here it is! When you want to save data, one of the best things to do is to look for a cell phone that comes with an in-built tuner. If you manage to do that, you can easily listen to music and other audio programs on the radio without paying for streaming.

However, if your phone does not have the provision of a built-in tuner, you will have to spend some money to use radio apps. But, don’t worry- I will tell you how to keep that cost to a minimum. To stop worrying about data consumption, you can simply opt for an unlimited data plan. This way, you do not have to worry constantly about running out of data,

Some of my friends who use limited mobile data plans are regular defaulters and end up paying extra every month for exceeding the limit. So, I would strongly recommend that you plan the data usage well in advance to avoid paying such fines. The other thing that you can do is shift to a Wi-Fi Connection. It’s a cheaper alternative in most parts of the world and will reduce your dependence on mobile data.

Final Words

With that, it’s a wrap!

I hope that I have answered all the questions that you were curious about. And I also hope that my efforts will help you manage your data consumption more efficiently. Trust me; with a little research and cautiousness, the task won’t seem very difficult.

It is true that a lot of cell phones today do not come with an in-built tuner, and only third-party apps can come to your rescue. So, the trick is to plan and keep a watch on data consumption. When you map the data usage properly, you will know what not to do to exceed the limits. And for more exciting reads, keep a watch on this space.

Until next time, fare thee well!
