How Far Apart Should Closet Rods Be
You would not want your back to strain while reaching the top of the closet; hence, using rods is a great idea. The ideal height would depend on how you wish to use the available storage space. If you want to install a single rod, the space could be assigned for long coats, dresses, pants, and suits.
But if you wish to hang smaller things, then opt for a double-rod system, which should work out well. Here, the lower and the upper rod should be parallel to the ground. You will also need to keep in mind the average height of adults.
Single-Rod Systems
For single rod systems, the standard height is around 66 inches from the base of the closet. This will provide you ample space to hang your essentials mid-air. Plus, there is no need to fold the clothes.
Double-Rod Systems
In the case of double rod systems, you will need to keep the top rod at 81 ¾ inches from the ground level. The lower rod can then be placed halfway at 40.5 inches from the ground. Some people also attach it at 30 inches from the ground keeping a 50-inch gap.
A critical point to remember while attaching two rods is that you need to leave at least 3 feet distance between two rods. Otherwise, clothes will hang over each other, and that would not look nice.
Also, if you wish to hang a shelf over the closet rod, then that needs to be around 54 inches from the floor.
Final Words
While working with closet rods, remember that the space between them is as important as the depth. If you wish to hang clothes, you will need at least 24 inches of closet depth. That means that the closet rod should be 12 inches away from the closet wall.
